About us

Whitehaven Coal is proud to be the leading Australian coal producer. Throughout our 20-year history, we have helped to power developed and emerging economies in Asia where there is strong and growing demand for our product, particularly for use in high-efficiency, low-emissions coal-fired power stations. Our coal is highly sought-after for its unique properties, including the fact it delivers among the lowest carbon emissions per tonne of coal consumed in the seaborne trade. Following the transformational acquisition of the Blackwater and Daunia mines, our portfolio will shift toward metallurgical coal, with approximately 70% of our revenue expected to come from metallurgical coal and 30% from thermal coal. We expect demand for our products to remain strong, particularly throughout our key Asia markets. Metallurgical coal is a critical component in steel making and our thermal coal will continue to have an important role to play in supporting global energy security during the multi-decade energy transition. We operate six mines (five open-cut and one large underground mine) in the Gunnedah Coal Basin of NSW and Bowen Basin of QLD. Our operating assets are complemented by two high-quality, near-term and large-scale development assets being Vickery, near Gunnedah, and Winchester South, near Moranbah. These operations are supported by offices in Sydney, Newcastle, Gunnedah, Brisbane and Tokyo. Over more than two decades, including over 15 years as a publicly-listed entity on the Australian Securities Exchange, we have developed a reputation for excellence in project delivery, safe operation, and targeted investment in the local economy and community.

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting Clontarf Foundation Academy boys at our Maules Creek Mine. Forty-two Year 9 and 10 students from Narrabri and Gunnedah high schools were accompanied by our Aboriginal Community Relations Team and welcomed by General Manager Jorge Moraga and his mine management team. After a presentation on the mine’s operations, the boys enjoyed a site tour and an informative session on progressive rehabilitation.

  • Congratulations Tim Steinhardt, Field Maintenance Boiler Maker from our Blackwater Mine for his recent nomination as 2024 Queensland Sports Official of the Year. What an accomplishment! Tim has been employed at Blackwater Mine for close to 13 years and has officiated Rugby League for over 16, after playing from the age of seven. Being on the FP field maintenance roster allows Tim to be involved heavily in officiating at all levels of Rugby League, which includes being President of the Central Highlands and Central West referee associations, referee coordinator for Blackwater Crushers as well as refereeing and coaching the young referees. Earlier this year Tim was awarded the QRL Contribution to Officiating Award. He’s been involved in three Panda Curtis games as a touch judge, refereed the outback State of Origin game between QLD and NSW, as well as refereeing the Legends of the League game in Blackwater. This year Tim was also selected to referee the QMC (Queensland Murri Carnival) in Brisbane, where he refereed the women’s Grand Final and was selected to carry Queen Elizabeth’s Commonwealth Games baton! Well done, Tim on your contribution to the Blackwater community and to rugby league.

Hayley Campbell, First Year Apprentice – Electrician, at our Daunia mine has recently returned from volunteering for Habitat for Humanity International in Nepal. In the eastern province of Nepal, renowned for Mount Everest, many families live in inadequate housing, lacking the security and comfort of proper shelter. Habitat for Humanity addresses these needs by building durable homes using sustainable, locally sourced materials, enhancing disaster resilience and promoting sustainability. Volunteers like Hayley are integral to this mission. We caught up with Hayley on her return from Nepal to find out more about what she’s described as a life changing adventure. • Did you know 35% of water used at our NSW operations in FY24 was recycled? We look to recycle water where we can. The prime operational areas for water recycling are the coal handling and preparation plants (CHPPs), where 70% of water was recycled. This equated to 35% of total water use. Whitehaven is committed to using our water resources transparently and responsibly. Learn more about our water stewardship approach in the Sustainability Report 2024: https://bit.ly/3ZIU6IW
