As many Australians are aware, Victoria, and particularly Melbourne, experienced one of the longest lockdowns in the world. This challenging period posed significant hurdles for our work in cancer control, as well as for maintaining connections among our employees and fostering a sense of belonging. It was heartening to learn that Todd Harper, CEO of Cancer Council, Victoria, discovered The Caring CEO podcast, which inspired him to share valuable ideas in our 70th episode with his leadership team. Together, they decided to prioritise three core values: kindness, connection, and gratitude. This initiative encouraged everyone in the organisation to embrace these values in their own unique ways, fostering a culture of support and positivity throughout our community. The results have been impressive, with engagement and net promoter scores surpassing pre-pandemic levels, a testament to the power of these principles in strengthening our workplace culture. Todd's dedication to getting things done is further exemplified by his previous work at QUIT and in tobacco control for Victoria, where he played a key role in achieving one of the lowest smoking rates in the world. We are excited to share Todd's insights with you, and we believe you'll find them both inspiring and impactful. We're excited to share valuable insights from our newest guest, Christy Pretzinger, the CEO of WG Content, a company that creates specialized content for the healthcare industry in the U.S. One aspect that really stood out is Christy's emphasis on kindness as a fundamental value of her organisation, which fits perfectly with the theme of The Caring CEO Podcast. She shares some practical ways that she and her team incorporate this value into their daily, weekly, and biannual routines. Christy highlights the importance of taking short breaks—10 minutes after 50 minutes of focused work—as a great self-care strategy. They also begin meetings with a short meditation to help people get centred. Christy has been involved with the Entrepreneurs Organization (EO) for many years, a networking group for entrepreneurs, and she talks about the significant benefits she has gained from this membership. A key point Christy values is the idea that discussions should focus on personal experiences—what has worked and what hasn’t—rather than just offering advice. Christy is also a big admirer of Brené Brown and her insights on vulnerability. She explains some practical ways she integrates this approach into her leadership style and interactions with clients. For regular listeners of The Caring CEO, you’re in for a treat with plenty of actionable tips on how to foster a kinder, more vulnerable, and ultimately more successful organisation. We love this post that appeared on Upworthy. What a great demonstration of a caring manager. It's not about the chocolates (although that helps 😀 ). It's about the fact that he really listened to his team member with empathy and compassion. Do you think Greg felt valued as a person when he received those chocolates? We're pretty sure that he did. Have you ever had an experience like this? We'd love to hear about it in the comments. #wecare365 #futurefitleader #resilientteams

With the news that psychological injury claims are increasing at three times the rate of physical safety claims in NSW, according to State Insurance Regulatory data, it's evident that may workplaces still don't prioritze mental health. SafeWork NSW have announced plans to crack down on big businesses that neglect the psychological health of their workers. However, we believe that managers should proactively engage in conversations with their teams to prevent small problems from escalating. Did you know that there are International Standard guidelines for managing psychosocial risks? They go by the catchy name of ISO 45003. Those guidelines look at the common hazards which can contribute to psychological injury. You can check out the guidelines HERE, but we've done the research for you. The hazards include: High workloads or job demands Low workloads or job demands leading to boredom Exposure to traumatic events that impact the ability to work and think clearly Lack of role clarity Low job control wherein someone feels out of control or powerless Conflict or poor workplace relationships between colleagues Poor support from manager Poor co-worker support Bullying and workplace violence Harassment, including sexual harassment Inadequate reward and recognition- Remote or isolated work Poor decision making Poor organisational change consultation Arguably, the most important part of managing psychological risks is open and ongoing communication within your workforce. By consulting with your employees and encouraging the sharing of information, not only will you be more aware of psychological hazards, but you'll have the input you need to entirely prevent or reduce the likelihood of injury. Your first priority is the wellbeing of your team.
