In 1950, Alan Turing considered the question ‘can machines think?’ Yesterday, at the UWA Data Institute Data Insights 2024 event, Professor Michael Small asked ‘what are we actually looking for when we talk about machines being intelligent?’ Michael was joined by the The University of Western Australia's Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Andrew Page and together they captivated 100+ attendees from across industry and academia with insights, thought provoking examples and a few laughs as they looked at how we can use data and tools to do something useful and intelligent. You can listen and see the presentations here: Michael Small : Artificial Intelligence and Authentic Information https://lnkd.in/gmKZ4FrJ Andrew Page: Can Data Science Treat Clinical Psychology? https://lnkd.in/gE5YN5fc Thanks to everyone who braved the heat to attend and to our wonderful team of volunteers who helped make the event such a success. A fantastic story about quantum research @ The University of Western Australia featuring Professor Jingbo Wang who is also a member of our UWA Data Institute Research Committee. Michael Small Julianne Sparke Tom Ridsdill-Smith
Great to see quantum technology making headlines in today's Sunday Times! (And what a photo Jingbo Wang!) Success in emerging technologies often comes down to positioning yourself at the edge of a fast-moving wave of innovation. At the wave's edge, even a slight lead can translate into incredible opportunities. 🌊🌊 This "small but powerful group" of physicists at UWA isn’t quite so small. Each research leader supports a vibrant team of early-career researchers, PhD candidates, and students. In Western Australia, we’re proud to have a critical mass of quantum (and quantum adjacent) talent—comfortably numbering in the hundreds. To put it in perspective, there are only about 2,000 people worldwide who know how to write quantum computing software, and around 20 of them are working with Professor Jingbo Wang at UWA! This number is growing fast. The University of Western Australia continues to attract some of the best and brightest students into our physics courses. It’s exciting to think about where this wave of talent and innovation will take us! David Gozzard Sascha Schediwy Michael Tobar Jeremy Bourhill #QuantumTechnology #Innovation #WAInnovation

Connections and Constellations: A Night to Remember with ACS WA The ACS WA community came together for a truly magical evening to celebrate the end of a busy and rewarding 2024. Members and friends gathered at Scitech’s Planetarium for an event that blended inspiration, recognition, and connection with a touch of cosmic wonder. The evening began with warm welcome and review of the year by ACS WA Branch Chair, Jerome C.. A highlight of the night was the recognition of Dr. Rachel Cardell-Oliver, newly elected as an ACS Fellow, presented by Brian von Konsky PhD(Curtin) FACS CP. Her remarkable contributions to ICT, particularly in leveraging machine learning for community and environmental benefit, left everyone inspired. As Rachel received her certificate and shared her thoughts, it was a moment of pride and motivation for all in attendance. The celebration then took a special turn as we were transported to the stars in Scitech’s immersive Planetarium. The live guided tour of the night sky—projected onto the 18m, 180-degree dome—was a breathtaking experience, a reminder of the limitless possibilities when science and technology come together. A big thank you to the amazing team at Scitech for their wonderful support. Of course, no ACS event is complete without great conversations. Over refreshments in the planetarium foyer, members, young professionals, and tech leaders connected, shared stories, and envisioned an exciting future for WA’s tech community. As we look ahead to 2025, we’re thrilled to continue building on this momentum. Mark your calendars for the exciting events already planned, including February’s AI debate, March’s deep dive into software testing, and May’s State Tech Summit. https://lnkd.in/gNkvkV36 https://lnkd.in/gqmaCb7t Thank you to everyone who made the End of Year Celebration so special, with a special mention to the ACS WA Emerging Professional Committee members; Olivia van der Kroon, Nyasha Mukoki, Pooya Tajvidi, Yagnesh C., Sam Try , who helped out on the evening. Here’s to a safe, joyful Christmas and New Year. Let’s continue reaching for the stars together in 2025. #ACS #ACSWA #EndOfYearCelebration #Community #Innovation #Networking #PlanetariumExperience
