We are delighted to welcome new Queensland Trade and Investment Commissioner – Middle East, Kassem Y.. With more than two decades of business experience, Kassem has led strategic initiatives to enhance trade and investment opportunities across the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia, significantly increasing bilateral business partnerships and economic growth. He has held senior roles with the State Government of Victoria and in 2024 was awarded the Public Service Medal for outstanding service in the areas of trade and investment between Australia, Victoria and the Middle East region. Prior to his career in government, Kassem worked in business development roles in the pharmaceutical sector. He is fluent in Arabic, English, French and Russian. Kassem will lead our Middle East team from our United Arab Emirates office as they support Queensland businesses and facilitate foreign investment. We also want to thank outgoing Commissioner Donna Massie for her contributions to promoting Queensland trade and investment in the region since 2013. We celebrated the enduring friendship between Queensland and China at the Taste of Queensland networking reception. 🤝 This year marks the 35th anniversary of Queensland's sister state agreement with Shanghai. Our state's largest ever trade delegation traveled to the city for the China International Import Expo. China is Queensland's largest export market, valued at more than $25 billion. Shanghai has been getting a Taste of Queensland at the China International Import Expo! TIQ Chair Daniel Gschwind and Queensland Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner for China Rhett Miller opened the Taste of Queensland Pavilion, which is showcasing 37 businesess within the Australia precinct in the CIIE Food Hall. The new Consulate General of India in Brisbane has been formally inaugurated India's Minister of External Affairs Dr S. Jaishankar. He was joined by Queensland Governor Dr Jeannette Young, Queensland Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training Ros Bates MP RN and Minister for Multiculturalism Fiona Simpson MP GAICD. The Consulate General will enhance trade, education, and cultural collaboration while providing crucial support to Queensland’s Indian diaspora. Dr Jaishankar expressed his gratitude to the Indian community, encouraging them to keep building bridges between the two nations. Queensland contributed almost 70 per cent of Australia's exports to India in FY23-24 and is home to more than 18,000 Indian international students.
