The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) is the medical college responsible for the training and professional development of ophthalmologists (medical eye specialists) in Australia and New Zealand. Our mission is to drive improvements in eye healthcare in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region through continuing exceptional training, education, research and advocacy. Underpinning all of our work is a commitment to, best patient outcomes, evidence based decision making, collaboration and collegiality. As such, we are responsible for training, examining and representing ophthalmologists of the highest order. This includes maintaining a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) system, organising scientific congresses and much more. The RANZCO Advocacy team and CEO attended the Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA) 2024 Year in Review morning tea, where RANZCO Fellow Dr Paul Beaumont was recognised as a founding member. Dr Paul Beaumont AM set up MDFA in 2001 to develop a patient-centred advocacy organisation for those at risk or suffering from macular disease. MDFA’s Patron, Ita Buttrose, recognised Dr Beaumont’s 24 years of service by highlighting his big picture vision and day-to-day care of patients with #maculardisease. Dr Clayton Barnes - Calvary Riverina Hospital's ophthalmologist – has been caring for the eyesight of the local Wagga Wagga community for over 30 years, having originally moved to the area so he could make a difference.
