About us

Searle x Waldron is an award winning architectural practice, focused on pub0lic, community and residential projects. SXWA design across scales, applying the same design ambition to different scales and typologies. Placing a strong emphasis on uncovering constraints to generate creative and innovative outcomes, we consider how even the smallest project can interact with the wider public and urban realm. The studio was founded after winning the first stage of the MoCAPE international competition for a Museum of Contemporary Art, our practice has completed a multi-purpose community space for the Art Gallery of Ballarat – Australia’s largest and oldest regional gallery which was awarded two 2012 Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Awards for ‘Public Architecture - Alterations and Additions’ and the ‘Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture.'

Very rewarding that Macarthur Street Primary School Amenities Pavilion received an Award for Small Project Architecture at the recent 2024 Victorian Architecture Awards. So proud of our team for all their efforts to make this project do so much more than the brief. And thanks to the jury for their lovely words and recognition of this. The jury citation: "The Macarthur Street Amenities Pavilion is a masterful example of architects exceeding a simple brief to deliver more with less. In this project, the deceptively simple brief of a school bathroom refurbishment takes a back seat to the extra amenity provided: a stage; an outdoor learning space; and a reinvented accessible entry to the primary school – all under a simple but joyous canopy. The bathroom refurbishment itself is well considered and vibrant, including a new DDA-compliant accessible bathroom lacking from the original layout. Seeing potential in the existing structure, a low-brick amenity block typical of schools across the state, the architects found spatial efficiencies within the bathroom layouts to provide additional storage and DDA-compliant bathroom while simultaneously reducing the internal footprint. This allowed for the project’s main offering, a vibrant verandah canopy connecting the much-loved existing mural by local artist Travis Price to the street. The exuberance of this project is contagious, showing the value of architecture in the simple structures of everyday life." Currently on site Northern Memorial Park Depot is a large scale mass timber project for The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust CNC profiled glulam beam trusses vary in height following the roof slope, creating a dynamic interplay of varying heights while maintaining precise alignment. Infill CLT floor slabs create occupiable first floor spaces and walkways nested between trusses - separating industrial operations facilities and specialist workshops. Excited to see this completed later in 2024! Lovely work by Jack Jordan Building Engineering Theca Gareth Connell
