Big News for Clean Energy in Bass Strait! The Federal Government has officially declared an offshore wind zone in Bass Strait after revising its initial proposal based on public feedback. What’s Changed? The zone is now 30% smaller and positioned 30km offshore (previously 20km). What’s Next? Developers can now apply for feasibility licenses, taking the first step toward building offshore wind farms. While progress is underway, turbines likely won’t start spinning until the 2030s. Why It Matters: Bass Strait has world-class wind resources, with sustained wind speeds over 8m/s. The zone could produce 20 gigawatts of clean, reliable energy — over half of southeast Australia’s current electricity demand. Up to 12,000 construction jobs and 6,000 ongoing roles in fields like engineering, seafaring, and cable installation. nicholas duigan #cleanenergy #offshorewind #windturbines #bassstrait #tasmania #australia #australiangovernment #climatenews #climate #environmentalnews #sustainabilitynews #planetearth #blueplanet #oceans #climatechange #climatescience #renewableenergy #ecofriendly #conservation #climateaction #socialimpact #climateeducation #surfersforclimate
About us
Surfers for Climate is an Australian-based registered charity dedicated to turning the tide on climate change. We recognise the ‘True Locals’ of this continent, honouring and learning from First Nations connection to country and culture. As ocean lovers, we have an intrinsic connection to nature and are reliant on a healthy ecosystem for our survival and enjoyment. We are all custodians of the ocean. We have a chance to prevent our favourite surf spots from becoming faded stories of waves we used to surf, and instead see them remain thriving places where future generations can create stoked out memories of their own. Climate change needs a status update; from a crisis that is happening to us, to a challenge that can be solved by us, as surfers and ocean lovers, taking leadership in the line-up.

CEO at Earthly | Optimistic Keynote Speaker | Host of Wilding Earth | On a mission to Restore >1% of the Planet by 2030
If Mother Nature Could Speak, What Would She Say? In this powerful video from Conservation International, Julia Roberts lends her voice to Mother Nature, delivering a clear and simple message: nature will endure, but humanity’s future depends on the choices we make today. “I’ve been here for over 4.5 billion years 22,500 times longer than you. I don’t really need people. But people need me. Yes, your future depends on me. When I thrive, you thrive.” It’s a reminder that our survival is deeply tied to the health of the planet. Supporting Mother Nature means recognising her intrinsic value and protecting the natural systems that sustain all life. Movements like the ‘Rights of Nature’, which advocate for legal protections for ecosystems, are driving a shift in how we view our relationship with the Earth, recognising nature as a living entity with its own rights, rather than just a resource to be used. Many orgnisations like Conservation International and Earthly are leading this charge, demonstrating how we can restore balance by protecting and regenerating the ecosystems we all rely on. Ultimately, by supporting Mother Nature, we ensure a future where both people and the planet can thrive. 🌍 (Credit: Conservation International)

Amazing! 😍 Thomas Deininger, born in 1970, is an American artist from Rhode Island known for his creative assemblages made from non-recyclable materials. His work takes a deep dive into environmental issues and challenges the impact of mass consumerism. Surfers For Climate reposted this
In the last sitting weeks of the Senate for 2024, Surfers For Climate CEO Josh Kirkman accepted my invitation to brief my colleagues on his noble ambition to have the Great Australian Bight listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Area. Josh brought along filmmaker and conservationist Kal Glanznig. Kal has been recognised as Environmental Citizen of the Year by Sutherland Shire in NSW. He screened his film ‘Rising Up’ at Parliament House. It examines the impacts of climate change and plastic pollution in Australia and the Pacific.

Mother Nature is just matching energies 😅 In the face of ecological collapse, comedy is becoming our last bastion of sanity. And the writing of this one is pure 🏆. “People always wanna give credit for a woman’s work to a man in a higher office.” Our planet’s future is on the line, and we can’t afford to sit this one out. By Elle Cordova, one of my favourite discoveries on Instagram lately!

Over 100 tradies were brought together at URBNSURF on Thursday around their shared love of surfing for our first ever Trade Up Cup event. The Trade Up is our effort as an environmental advocacy group to bring in new friends from outside of the 'eco-bubble' by providing education and experiences for tradies that helps them start the journey towards helping build the future we want. The Trade Up Cup would not have been possible without the support of a few paradigm-breaking donors, the surf tradies who dropped tools for the day to get involved, the Surfers for Climate team hustling like crazy, and this list of legendary sponsors and partners who took a punt on a surf event for tradies that connected the dots between what surfers love (waves) and the sustainable building opportunities that are with us right now: VOLCOM CSR Limited Bonsoy Young Henrys Colormaker Industries Buckaroo Leatherworks Pty Ltd SafeStyle Pty Ltd Airgarden YETI SLURRYTUB Tracks Magazine With Trade Up Cup V.1 done. Get in touch with us about supporting V.2 due next year. Production by Adrian Emerton

Her writing blends myth, folklore, and personal experience, exploring themes of identity, destiny, and nature. After returning to Denmark, she gained international acclaim and was nominated several times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Last night I hosted Salty Brains trivia at the Harbord Hotel for Surfers For Climate, and picked up some unexpected knowledge along the way: - The construction industry accounts for 30% of global carbon emissions - makes you think about the impact our builders and tradies could have on climate action. - Offshore wind power has been around longer than I thought - Denmark's first turbine went up in 1991. We've got some catching up to do. - It's quite hard to parent overexcited small children while you're holding a microphone in a crowded pub. I don't recommend it. Thanks very much Surfers For Climate and Manly Women's Surf Society for having me.

As the climate changes so do outdoor sports. 😔 Extreme heat and wash outs are already dropping in on the sports we love to play. 💯 Big thanks to Joanne Bowen, Josh Kirkman, and Nicola Barr for sharing how sport is adapting and charging for greater action on climate change. 👏 There’s no lull on climate. If your fave outdoor sport is in the impact zone, take action for the future of the sport you and all of us love! 🏏✨ #AdaptNSW2024 #cricketforclimate #ClimateAction #SustainableSports #GSW #frontrunners #surfersforclimate Surfers For Climate GWS GIANTS FrontRunners Athletes
