Exciting Changes in Aged Care Aged care is evolving! The Support at Home Program will replace Home Care Packages in July 2025. A key highlight is the new Assistive Technology and Home Modification (AT-HM) Scheme. This initiative benefits older Australians by providing upfront access to essential equipment, products, and home modifications, removing the need to save from quarterly budgets. These changes aim to make aged care more accessible, practical, and tailored to individual needs, enhancing the quality of life for participants and their families. Access will be based on aged care assessments and assigning participants to low, medium, or high funding tiers. The funding covers items for self-care, mobility, home safety, and more, along with related services and coordination. Participants approved for both assistive technology and home modifications can combine allocations for maximum support. The Government is also piloting equipment loans through EnableNSW, with full implementation expected also from July 2025. Stay tuned for more details as we roll out these transformative changes to improve aged care services. Need help understanding the upcoming changes? Elizabeth’s Gift of Compassion Elizabeth’s incredible journey with St Simeon Healthcare began a few years ago when she volunteered to spend time with elderly residents, offering companionship and brightening their days. What started as a simple desire to honour her late grandmother’s memory soon evolved into a fulfilling career. "After my grandmother passed, I knew I wanted to help other elderly people feel valued. Volunteering showed me just how important it is to spend time with them, listening to their stories, insights and their advice," Elizabeth shared. In her role as a volunteer, Elizabeth quickly realised the deep impact of social connection. Sitting with residents, and sharing conversations, allowed her to see how crucial companionship is in combating isolation. Her dedication didn’t go unnoticed, and her heart for elderly care grew stronger. This experience ignited a new passion in Elizabeth. She decided to pursue nursing, inspired by the difference she could make in the lives of those in need. Today, Elizabeth works as a nurse continuing her mission of care and compassion, helping residents live with dignity and joy. Elizabeth's story is a testament to the power of empathy and the impact of a caring heart. She reminds us that compassion isn’t just about providing care — it’s about connection, honouring people at whatever stage of life they are at, and truly listening to their stories. St Simeon Healthcare is proud to have been part of her journey, supporting her growth from volunteer to nurse, as she continues to uplift our community. Stay Active at Home with Simple Exercises for Seniors to Enhance Strength and Balance Staying active is essential for seniors, promoting both physical and mental well-being. Regular exercise, even light movement, can improve heart health, strengthen bones, and uplift your mood. For older Australians who spend much of their time at home, here are a few safe and effective exercises to maintain strength and balance. Please Note: Before beginning any new exercise routine, it’s essential to consult your doctor or healthcare provider, especially if you have pre-existing conditions or mobility issues. Always stop if you feel unwell and rest as needed. Marching in Place This simple exercise builds leg strength and improves heart and lung function. Start by marching in place for as long as comfortable. As you progress, lift your knees higher and swing your arms more vigorously. Balance on One Foot Standing behind a sturdy chair, lift one foot off the ground, balancing on the other. This exercise strengthens your lower body and improves balance, helping prevent falls. Chair Sits Strengthen your thighs and glutes by slowly sitting and standing from a chair. This movement helps with daily tasks like getting out of chairs or beds. Staying active is key to maintaining health and independence. At St Simeon Healthcare, we support your journey to a healthier, fuller life with compassionate care that empowers you to stay active and independent. Simple exercises like these can make a big difference in how you feel each day! A New Era for Aged Care in Australia The recent agreement on a rights-based Aged Care Act marks a pivotal moment for Australia’s aged care sector. This new legislation, born out of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety's top recommendation, promises to deliver long-term improvements and financial sustainability to the industry. As Australia's population continues to age, the demand for quality aged care is growing rapidly. The new Act is a significant step towards ensuring that older Australians receive the high levels of care they deserve, while also addressing key financial challenges faced by providers. With this new legislation, aged care providers can look forward to a more stable and sustainable future, with reforms aimed at increasing financial security and enabling investment in new facilities. Over the next two decades, it’s anticipated that an additional 10,000 new beds will need to be opened annually to meet the needs of our ageing population. The new Act will pave the way for the necessary investments to make this a reality. At St Simeon Aged Care, we are excited about the potential of this legislation to strengthen the sector and create a more vibrant, efficient aged care system for all Australians. By supporting these reforms, we can work together to build a world-class aged care system that not only meets but exceeds expectations. This is a promising start to a brighter future for aged care!
