Soap Aid
Non-profit Organizations
The lifesaving power of washing hands with soap is profound
About us
Soap Aid is a not-for-profit organisation founded in Australia. Today across the globe over 2 billion people lack adequate sanitation. As a direct result, it is estimated that 1.8 million children under the age of 5 die each year due to hygiene related illnesses. This equates to 6,000 deaths each day. One of the major causes of childhood deaths is diarrhoea. By the simple act of a child washing their hands with a bar of soap, we could potentially reduce the number of diarrhoea cases by over 40 per cent. In an effort to prevent these needless deaths, we collect waste soap from hotels worldwide and send them to a central processing plant, where we re-process the discarded soaps and turn them back into new, useful bars of soap that will help save lives. Soap Aid was born from a Melbourne family’s 25 year involvement in the hotel amenities supply business and their deep understanding and consciousness about their commercial impact on the environment and desire to protect the global community.

A huge thank you to #CastlereaghBoutiqueHotel for being part of our Hotel to Hands program and recycling your soap bars with us! Your commitment not only helps reduce waste but also provides lifesaving hygiene to vulnerable communities around the world. Together, we’re saving lives and protecting our planet—one recycled bar of soap at a time. 🌏🧼
The Castlereagh Boutique Hotel recognised the lifesaving dual initiatives that formed the foundations for the launch of not-for-profit Soap Aid in 2011 – supporting improved hygiene within disadvantaged communities while positively impacting the environment. In 2023-24, Soap Aid donated over 23 tons of recycled soap to those in need within Australia – including indigenous communities in Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory. At a time when many are finding it extremely challenging, these donations also supported foodbanks and emergency relief efforts within Victoria. What does this mean in terms of those tiny hotel soaps that are frequently only used two or three times during your stay? This equates to more than 230,000 soap bars that were saved from landfill and repurposed for a much greater good. We have been proud partners of Soap Aid for six years and are delighted to feature their range of bathroom amenities throughout our hotel. https://lnkd.in/ggEZD5DM #castlegreaghboutiquehotel #heritagebuilding #accommodation #sustainability #reducingwaste #soapaid

🎉 Celebrating the amazing work and sustainability of our Soap Aid Champion, The Rees Hotel, Luxury Apartments & Lakeside Residences 🎉 At The Rees Hotel Queenstown, we’re proud to support Soap Aid, ensuring used guest soaps are repurposed to provide life-saving hygiene products to vulnerable communities in need. This partnership and our shared efforts are celebrated with our team during onboarding, induction, and training. It reflects our commitment to reducing landfill waste and helping those who need it most. In 2021, we transitioned to refillable toiletry bottles, eliminating single-use plastics. While retaining hard bar soaps for guest enjoyment, we’ve ensured they serve a greater purpose through our Soap Aid collaboration. Additionally, we’ve partnered with Forest & Bird and contributed over $2000 supporting New Zealand’s leading conservation efforts to protect native wildlife and habitats. Thank you for supporting us as we strive to make a difference locally and globally. He waka eke noa! Thank you, The Rees Hotel Queenstown for being part of our Hotel to Hands program and for the work you do to ensure you are a #sustainableaccommodation If you are interested in joining our soap recycling program, find out more at soapaid.org #soaprecycling #greentourism #sustainability #nzrecycling #hoteltohands

Soap Aid is incredibly grateful for our partnership with the Schwartz Family Company and Dr Jerry Schwartz for continuously prioritising the reduction of hygiene related illnesses and sustainability, through their unwavering support of Soap Aid and the Soap Aid Hotel to Hands Waste soap recycling programme. Our fantastic Soap Aid Champion, Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour have diverted 2,815kg of used soap from landfill since joining our Hotel to Hands soap recycling program in 2018. Sofitel’s Executive Housekeeper, Karolina Sadalska, who leads this sustainability initiative within the hotel said: “We have been proud partners with Soap Aid for the past six years, with only a brief interruption during the pandemic,” said Karolina. “Over the years, our team has remained deeply committed to promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility. Recycling, sustainability, and other environmental initiatives are integral to our culture and are included in our onboarding process to ensure every team member understands their importance from day one.” Dr Schwartz said it was a “natural” to support an organisation like Soap Aid, and he believed that more hotel groups could introduce sustainability measures to reduce their environmental footprint. “Hotels need to be holistic in terms of how they operate, and sustainability should be a priority of every hotel operation,” said Dr Schwartz. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! Reviewing the products we use in our daily lives is also incredibly important. Hard soap bars are 100% recyclable and the most sustainable option for handwashing at the basin. Choosing hard bar soap over liquid soap means reduced plastic, reduced emissions from transportation and the waste is 100% recyclable through Soap Aid. Reduce your impact on the environment! Choose hard bar soap at the basin - it is by far the most sustainable option! Every little bar counts! #NationalRecyclingWeek #ReduceReuseRecycle #circulareconomy #RecyclingAustralia #RecyclingNewZealand #planetark #soaprecycling #hoteltohands

We are incredibly proud to partner with Quest Apartment Hotels, Quest Notting Hill through our waste soap recycling program, Hotel to Hands. Every little bar makes a difference. Thank you Quest Apartment Hotels! #TheAscottLimited #AscottAustralia
🫧Your old soap can save lives and we’re proud to partner with Soap Aid to make it happen. Soap Aid is a remarkable organisation that not only recycles waste soap, but does it with the goal of saving lives in vulnerable communities where lack of access to sanitation can have devastating results – both internationally and right here in Australia. Since Quest’s partnership with Soap Aid began, 773 kgs of soap waste have been diverted from landfill, while 7,730 bars of soap have been created for distribution in disadvantaged communities in need. We’ve supplied 12 months worth of soap for 644 children, and saved an estimated 283 children’s lives. 🙌 Soap Aid is incredibly grateful to our tribe of inspiring partners. Through our partnerships, we achieve our mission - saving lives while diverting waste from local landfills. We are continuously proud of our long history with Rotary. Originally, all waste soap across Australia was collected by a network of dedicated volunteers from local Rotary clubs. Eventually, the waste soap volume and demand for recycled soap bars outgrew the volunteer base and Soap Aid developed the subscription-based collection model that we use today, which allows us to collect soap from the furthest points across Australia and New Zealand. It is thanks to Rotary and their initial support in collecting soap from accommodations that Soap Aid was able to receive waste soap to recycle and send out to communities. 🎉 Thank you to Rotary and to our partners that make what we do possible! Fighting zoonotic diseases up in the Northern Territory at Roper Gulf is a little bit easier this year with the supply of Soap Aid’s recycled soap bars. Zoonoses (diseases passed from animals to humans) can be prevented by practicing good personal hygiene, particularly after handling animals. The team at Roper Gulf Regional Council’s Animal Management Program have been distributing Soap Aid soap alongside their education programs for animal and human hygiene.
