About us
The Shire of Broome is located in the Kimberley Region of WA and is a favourite holiday destination for visitors from around Australia and the world with its unique history, tropical climate and natural attractions. It covers 56,000sqkm with a population of about 17,000 people. Remnants of Broome’s exotic pearling past are everywhere. The town’s multicultural community ensures an array of gourmet tastes, colourful characters and cultural influences. Chinatown is home to some of the world’s finest pearl showrooms along with other retail outlets. Broome's attractions include Cable Beach, Dampier Peninsula, Staircase to the Moon, dinosaur footprints, Courthouse Markets, heritage-listed Sun Pictures and the Shinju Matsuri Festival. While the cattle and pearling industries were the main economic drivers in the past, more recently Broome has become a high profile tourist destination, with many residents employed to share Broome’s tourism experiences with the thousands of visitors to the Kimberley during the high season. Broome’s other major industries include fishing, aquaculture, agriculture, horticulture, mining and exploration, and logistics, with the expansion of these sectors expected to generate economic growth for the region and offering greater employment opportunities into the future. With education facilities, restaurants, shopping, medical centres and a regional hospital, together with the opportunity to relax, camp and fish in the Kimberley, Broome’s lifestyle is a drawcard for travellers to settle permanently in the town. Broome is home to many government agencies which service the wider Kimberley region. With a climate ideal for outdoor activities, Broome’s many sporting clubs and recreation facilities encourage community participation.

The Shire of Broome is proud to announce that the Walmanyjun Cable Beach Foreshore Redevelopment has won the Planning Institute of Australia 2024 Awards for Planning Excellence in the Stakeholder Engagement category. A true community effort, every step of the way it has been the feedback and the passion of the people that have shaped this project and helped to take home the win. The project was nominated for originality and innovation due to its inclusion of Traditional Owners in key decision-making roles, culturally sensitive coastal protection solutions, and a broad community engagement process. Stage 1 of the project construction is currently underway, and the vision for the foreshore precinct is taking shape. Exciting progress is underway at Walmanyjun Cable Beach as dune rejuvenation efforts have begun! This week, the Shire’s horticulture team started planting over 8,000 native seedlings, specially cultivated in our nursery from locally collected seeds. These native plants are key to promoting biodiversity, providing essential habitats, and ensuring long-term sustainability. Brushing has been placed around the seedlings to stabilise the dune, reduce sand movement, and protect the plants as they establish.
