About us

RedR Australia is a leading international humanitarian response agency that selects, trains, and deploys technical specialists. RedR Australia provides skilled people and training to help communities plan, prepare, rebuild, and recover before, during, and after crises and conflict. RedR Australia maintains a roster of more than 1000 technical experts across a range of skill profiles including disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, recovery, and stabilisation activities in times of need. RedR Australia is a Standby Partner to 16 United Nations agencies or entities, as well as other front line relief agencies and local governments. During a humanitarian crisis, a global network of Standby Partner organisations provides additional support to UN response efforts. RedR Australia is the only Standby Partner to the UN in the southern hemisphere. RedR Australia also manages the Australia Assists program, an integrated civilian capability co-designed by RedR Australia and the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which further enables RedR Australia to mobilise at every stage of the disaster cycle. RedR Australia is also a leading provider of humanitarian training courses. These courses help equip potential and experienced aid workers with the specialised skills and knowledge to maximise their effectiveness in the field. Our specialists also build resilience in disaster prone countries through our disaster preparedness training activities and strategic collaboration with National Disaster Management Offices throughout the Asia Pacific. • Roster member Rebeca, has been working closely with the National Veterinary Directorate (DNV) under Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Forestries (MALFF) in Timor-Leste, alongside the Australian Embassy, and other key stakeholders to finalise a comprehensive Risk Communication and Community Engagement strategy rooted in the principles of “One Health” approach-  As the Public Health Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) Specialist for the rabies outbreak response in Timor-Leste, supported by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) this role and project is supporting the management of a significant health issue for communities.   Timor-Leste had been rabies-free until March 2024, when the first ever human case of rabies, following a dog bite, was detected in Timor-Leste. This unprecedented challenge has highlighted the critical need for a coordinated response to protect both public and animal health.   During her first month of deployment, Rebeca engaged with national and international partners to co-develop joint Information, Communication, and Education materials and leverage existing networks to deliver rabies messages effectively to the target audience. She also reached out to community champions and respected local influencers to strengthen the campaign’s reach and resonance.    Rebeca joined the DNV vaccination team in Covalima - a high-risk Municipality - for a field assessment, which provided valuable insights into community dynamics, barriers to dog vaccination compliance, and effective communication pathways. Her findings have informed actionable recommendations to enhance community engagement and support the dog vaccination campaign.    Looking ahead, Rebeca will lead the implementation of the RCCE campaign in early 2025. This initiative will ensure targeted messaging and widespread community involvement, reinforcing the shared responsibility of safeguarding public and animal health in the fight against rabies in Timor-Leste.   This is RedR Australia's first deployment partnership with DAFF, we are honored to be a part of such an important public health initiative. #MALFF #RCCE #PublicHealth #TimorLeste #humanitarianresponse

  • In April last year violence erupted on the streets of Khartoum between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The conflict is still ongoing. Humanitarian access has been limited and disrupted by the conflict, leaving local people and communities in great need. RedR Australia roster member, Alexis is working as a Operations Support and Logistics Specialist, with the World Health Organization (WHO), to provide essential medical supplies to the thousands of displaced people and families. Recently, Alexis was part of the team supporting the delivery of 9 trucks loaded with 694 critical medical kits and supplies to aid some 366,100 people across West, Central, East and South Darfur. Access to Healthcare is a fundamental human right even in times of conflict. With support from Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Alexis' critical work is making it easier and fairer for people in need to access medical supplies. #humanrights #sudan #HumanitarianRelief

  • “We need at least 16 days of activism to raise our voices about this issue. People don't like to talk about it. People don't like to think about it, but in reality, thousands and thousands of people suffer from this—and if they suffer in silence, it only makes it easier for the perpetrators to continue on. We need decision makers to understand that we need to move forward, and we let those who have been victims know that what has happened to them is unacceptable and they have dignity.” —Dr. Helen Durham AO, humanitarian lawyer and RedR Australia CEO    Listen to Helen’s episode on RedR Australia’s podcast, Humanitarian Conversations: https://lnkd.in/gTQ7eXgE     #16Days #NoExcuse #HumanRightsDay

  • #16days #endGBV We know that gender- based violence increases in the wake of disaster and this is just as true close to home as it is further afield. Let's talk about this and acknowledge that it happens so we can put more preventative measures in place during planning and preparedness stages. Read more about this in a research paper from the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience knowledge hub- https://lnkd.in/g-QVCVFc Title- Gender and sexual minorities and disaster: balancing structural and agentic perspectives Author- Dr Tegan Larin  Publication- Australian Journal of Emergency Management  Date-July 2024 edition "Violence and sexual assault are particular concerns for women and girls in the aftermath, recovery and rebuilding after disaster. For example, following the Northern Rivers floods in 2022 in the north-eastern region of New South Wales, which affected 18 small towns and settlements as well as a major urban centre, women reported experiencing sexual assaults and violence in emergency shelters (Foote et al. 2023)."

🎙 In the midst of a raging conflict, how can you tell the difference between a civilian and a combatant? In this extra-special episode of Humanitarian Conversations, RedR Australia’s CEO Dr Helen Durham AO sits down with international lawyer and Geneva Call's Myanmar country director, Firouzeh, to discuss the power and complexities of international humanitarian law (IHL). Firouzeh and Helen discuss the challenges of the current crisis in Myanmar and how difficult it is to define a ‘civilian’ in this conflict.    Following this, Helen and Sally also chat more broadly about the state of IHL during today’s conflicts, and what all humanitarian and development workers should know about IHL before heading out into the field.     Listen now: https://lnkd.in/gVHJ8Ntd  Listen on Apple: https://lnkd.in/gdJRtnxk  Listen on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gg7GqkYe    Geneva Call | International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC | Australian Red Cross | Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights | Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
