Meet Sue, an exceptional healthcare leader and 2024 Excellence in Remote and Isolated Nursing Health Practice Award recipient. 🌟 As the Director of Nursing at the Birdsville Primary Health Centre, part of the Central West Hospital and Health Service, this award recognises Sue's unwavering commitment to improving healthcare access in remote communities. With years of experience working in rural and remote healthcare settings, Sue has made a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of Birdsville’s residents and the many tourists who visit the region. 'When you live in a small community, everyone knows everyone, and this adds an extra layer of care that is needed. You develop a strong connection to the people in your community,' she said. 'It’s amazing to receive this recognition, not only for my commitment, but for all the nurses in our system that work in challenging circumstances far away from metropolitan hospitals. 'The award helps promote remote area nursing, and if our stories inspire others to join this field, then it’s a great opportunity to grow the nursing workforce.' Sue is also a passionate advocate for the professional development of junior nurses. Through mentorship, education, and guidance, she ensures the next generation of healthcare professionals are well-supported in their careers. Whether handling emergency care during events like music festivals and races, or fostering a sense of support within the community, Sue’s work is a powerful reminder of how essential she and other healthcare staff working in isolated areas are. Congratulations, Sue, on this well-deserved recognition! Your dedication to rural and remote nursing is truly inspiring. 🥰 #HealthHero

Rehabilitation delivered closer to home and loved ones is important for everyone. 🏠 For Mikayla, a proud Eastern Arrernte, Wakaya, Kalkadoon and Waanyi woman, care closer to home is spiritual. Mount Isa represents home, family, community and connection to country and culture for her. 🤗 Right now she’s in Townsville after being in a Brisbane hospital where she was treated for an acquired brain injury and spinal cord injury in 2021. 'That is a long way from home. It’s been better for me to come here to Townsville for my rehabilitation. It’s not my forever, but for now, it’s the right place,' Mikayla said. Due to her experiences, Mikayla is involved in the co-design of the new Spinal Injuries Service Delivery Model. This model is expanding spinal cord injury expertise statewide. It will help make hospital rehabilitation services more available closer to home for people who need it. Watch to find out more about how the new service delivery will change the lives of those with traumatic spinal cord injuries. 👇 #SpinalCordInjury #Rehabilitation #HealthHero

'People may not remember what you said, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel. In mental health, this is more powerful than ever.' Meet Stephen, the Medical Director of the Child and Youth Mental Health Service who is leading the way in delivering high-quality mental health services across Queensland. 🌟 The Child and Youth Mental Health Service offers care for younger people experiencing mental health issues, and support for their families and caregivers. With over 20 years of experience as a child psychiatrist, he’s not only shaping the future of mental health care, but also providing hands-on support in weekly outpatient clinics, offering psychiatric care to young people and their families. Stephen says that working with children and families has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his career. 'Working with children and families has taught me many valuable lessons,' he said. 'Firstly, the importance of truly listening and paying deep attention to what is said to you — it’s one of the purest forms of generosity we can give to the families we care for.' Stephen highlighted the importance of trust in the process throughout his work. 'Parents and young people often intuitively know what they need. This has taught me the importance of curiosity and humility.' Thank you, Stephen, and your team, for your dedication and incredible difference you make in the lives of children, young people, and their families across Queensland. 💖 Via: Children's Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service #HealthHero

Bradley has worked at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) for 35 years and has seen it all. Now he's helping lead the way as the hospital celebrates 70 years of care! 🎉💙 As a surgical nurse educator, Bradley has witnessed the growth and evolution of TPCH, from the first organ transplants in the early 1990's to the latest advancements in healthcare. A surgical nurse educator helps to create and deliver training for nurses, making sure they have the skills and knowledge they need. They also promote the use of the latest research to improve patient care, support ongoing learning, and help make healthcare safer and better for everyone. 'While new technology has transformed the way we deliver care, the heart of what we do—compassionate support for our patients—has never changed,' Bradley said. Bradley’s passion for preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals is at the core of all the work he does. 'We’re responsible for training tomorrow’s caregivers. One day, we’ll be the ones needing care ourselves, so it’s crucial that we leave TPCH well-resourced and staffed with skilled, compassionate nurses.' A big thank you to Bradley for his incredible service and dedication to TPCH, shaping the future of care for generations to come! 💙👏 Via Metro North Health #HealthHero

Meet Carl, a dedicated Surgical Rapid Assessment Unit (SRAU) surgeon who is passionate about transforming emergency surgical care. 🏥 The SRAU located at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) is one of first units launched in Queensland, coordinated by the Healthcare Improvement Unit (HIU). The unit's team is changing how emergency surgical care is provided for patients by focussing on speed and precision and offering early, senior surgical decision making to ensure patients get the right care, when they need it. Carl began his medical career at the RBWH in 2004 as an intern, returning after training across Queensland to help transform emergency surgical care in the Emergency and Trauma Centre (ETC) as part of the SRAU team. What makes Carl’s role truly rewarding is the collaboration within his team (pictured below), which includes a consultant general surgeon, a clinical nurse consultant, and a principal house officer. 'We’re all working towards the same goal—to provide the best care possible,' he said. 'Emergency general surgical patients can be quite sick, so when we intervene quickly, we can really make a difference.' Since launching, the SRAU has delivered impressive results. Staff satisfaction has been high, with consultants praising the service. The team’s ability to quickly assess and treat patients has led to a higher discharge rate, easing bed pressure. The SRAU has also streamlined the referral process between the emergency department ED and general surgery, allowing for immediate assessments and faster decisions. Carl said one of the unit's key innovations has been the virtual ward. ✨ 'We’ve set up a direct pathway for patients to be admitted to the virtual ward, bypassing the need for an inpatient bed,' he said. Thanks to Carl and his dedicated team, emergency surgical care at the RBWH has reached new heights, and patients are benefiting from faster, more efficient care than ever before. A big thank you to Carl and his team for their unwavering commitment to improving lives, one patient at a time. 🙌 Metro North Health #HealthHeros

It seems Ernie has discovered the secret to a long, healthy life! 😁 The resident from Parklands Residential Aged Care Facility (RACF) in Townsville, recently celebrated his 100th birthday in style with a 1920's themed party. 🎉 Apparently, he got on the dance floor and didn't stop dancing for an hour and a half. 🕺 As far as we know (unless Ernie's holding out on us), there's no magic fountain of youth. But there are things you can do to stay healthy and live your life to the fullest. 💪 Eating a balanced diet and exercising are key to staying healthy. You can also have a yearly general health check. 🗓️ Health checks are important for people of any age. They help pick up things early that could affect your physical and mental health. For some, you'll need to visit your GP. For others, you can see a pharmacist or a dedicated clinic (such as a breast screening clinic). So, here's a reminder to book in today for a check-up with your healthcare provider. 😉 Oh, and Happy Birthday, Ernie — what a legend! 🥳 Via Townsville Hospital and Health Service

'It's incredibly rewarding to be part of a team that’s improving the health and wellbeing of families in the north west.' Meet Ludana, a passionate midwife and child health nurse based in Mount Isa. 🌟 Ludana’s healthcare journey began in 2007 as a hospital nurse, before moving to an Aboriginal Medical Service where she identified a gap in child and family health services. This inspired her to make a difference by focusing on child health and immunisation, which ultimately led her to pursue a career in midwifery. ✨ 'I’ve been fortunate to work across the north west district, gaining a wide range of nursing skills that aren’t available elsewhere,' Ludana said. 'The versatility of nursing in this region is something truly unique.' Her passion for family health was further ignited by two incredible mentors—Linda and Mary, child health nurses and midwives with over 50 years of combined experience. Inspired by their expertise and dedication, Ludana made the exciting leap into midwifery and proudly completed her qualification in August this year. ✨ 'What I love most is seeing new life being brought into the world, and the privilege of educating and empowering families through primary healthcare,' she said. Outside of work, Ludana embraces the north west lifestyle, enjoying camping, fishing, and hunting with her family. She’s also an active member of the local sporting community, building lifelong friendships through her kids’ sports activities. 😊 Congratulations on this amazing achievement, Ludana, and thank you for your dedication to the families of the north west! 💖👶 Via North West Hospital and Health Service #HealthHero #Midwife

We all know pharmacists work with medicines, but their role involves much more than just sticking labels on bottles! 💊 Chastina is a Clinical Pharmacist at Logan Hospital within Metro South Health. She explains that her work goes far beyond dispensing medications; pharmacists save lives through medication safety projects and their therapeutic knowledge. 'I help patients with medication management, ensuring they know how to take them properly, checking for interactions, and making sure the doses meet the needs of the person, not just their condition,' she said. 'Not all medications are a good fit for each patient and pharmacists hold expert knowledge and insight in knowing when medications are causing problems and what action needs to be taken.' Chastina finds great meaning in helping her patients reach their goals and loves working alongside a team of dieticians, physiotherapists, doctors and nurses to come up with tailored and co-ordinated treatment plans. 🙌 As a Nywaigi Mamu Bidjara woman, connecting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients to provide culturally safe care is another part of the job Chastina loves. ❤️ 'I value the opportunity to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients feel safe and answer any questions that they perhaps haven’t felt confident to ask of other people – even if it’s nothing to do with medicines,' she said. Thank you for making a real difference in the lives of your patients, Chastina! 🥰 #ForReal #QldHealth #FirstNations #Pharmacy
