Growcom’s Hort360 GBR facilitators have coordinated a series of grower-led learning opportunities across Far North Queensland and the Wide Bay-Burnett in recent months. Workshops and field days exploring fencing, feral pig management, pests, as well as sediment and erosion control have received great grower turnout and provided growers with practical learnings they can take back to implement on their own farms. Last December, we watched on as Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper left a trail of destruction across Far North Queensland. The wild weather cutting deep scars across properties and people’s lives.  Jasper’s heavy rainfall severely impacted FNQ growers. It resulted in damaged infrastructure (irrigation, fencing, internal roads, drains and significant soil losses), tree deaths, and kept growers off paddocks for weeks. This adversely affected harvesting and management operations, as well as profitability and caused much stress. Alongside production and income losses, the impacts of erosion are still being felt by many horticultural growers today, one year on.

We told you we'd have more to say about The Demographics Group's presentations at Queensland Farmers' Federation's 'Australia 2025' breakfast last week... A key takeaway for us is that building agriculture means building regional Queensland 🤝 To do that we need to: ✅ Keep 20- and 30- somethings in the regions and keep the future of ag strong with jobs, affordable housing, healthcare, and schooling/childcare. ✅ Embrace migration, otherwise our labour force and the country will shrink. ✅ Upskill in knowledge and human services jobs: aged care worker will overtake sales assistant as #1 job in the country. ✅ Have trades and services in the regions to keep ag ticking over: have qualified trades where they're needed and minimise downtime of vital equipment.
