Come with us on the third annual Qantas & Australian Red Cross gift drive 🎁✈️ This year we took our QantasLink 'Dasher-8' up to Cairns to deliver some Christmas cheer to Mossman State School, which was impacted by ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper exactly 12 months ago.
Our Qantas Freight team are gearing up for a busy Christmas and have unveiled a special 'Santa's Freight' aircraft to help deliver more than 50,000 tonnes of international and domestic freight over the festive season. Qantas Freight will boost its operation by flying around 550 additional hours across the domestic network in November and December to get gifts under trees and ingredients on tables in time for Christmas. On the busiest days leading up to Christmas, across the global network, Qantas Freight will carry around one million kilograms of cargo per day, which is around 70 per cent more than its usual daily uplift. Keep an eye out for Santa's Freight coming to an airport near you!
This is a story about never giving up. Jeremy Robertson first joined Qantas as a pilot in 2001. In 2010, after a chest infection, he developed type 1 diabetes. As a consequence he lost his aviation medical clearance to fly. Not one to take this lying down, Jeremy became a doctor of medicine with a focus on aviation. He was eventually able to get a clearance to fly small aircraft, but not with paying passengers on board. For years, he maintained records of his blood sugar levels whilst flying. In 2016, he submitted these records to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), along with data that the UK and Canadian aviation regulators had on allowing aviators with type 1 diabetes to fly. After three years of review, CASA changed their policies and Jeremy finally regained his full medical clearance to fly in 2020. Because of his efforts, several other pilots in Australia with type 1 diabetes have been able to continue their careers (the first of which joined Jeremy on the last two flights of his final check, to show his support). Earlier this year Jeremy completed his re-training as a Boeing 737 First Officer - some 14 years later. Congratulations, Jeremy!
Taking festive flying to new heights! 🎁🎄🎅 We've unveiled our Christmas fleet, including QantasLink Q400 Dasher-8 (VH-QON) and Boeing 737 Roo-dolph (VH-VZX), and customers who travel on them this month will earn double Qantas Points. Also, from next week, a Qantas Freight A321 aircraft will be decorated with a special ‘Santa’s Freight’ livery to help transport Christmas presents and festive fare across the country.
Say hello to our first Airbus Aircraft A321XLR! 😍 The aircraft has now progressed to the final assembly line at Airbus' Finkenwerder production facility in Hamburg, Germany ahead of its scheduled delivery in April 2025. Our first A321XLR will sport the rego VH-OGA and will be named 'Great Ocean Road', with our employees given the opportunity to name the new fleet type after Australian walks, rivers, and roads.
Today marks our annual Joey Joy Flight! For nearly 50 years, Qantas Pathfinders, Rotary, and our incredible crew have come together to make this special event a reality. Almost 300 children boarded our Airbus A330 for a 90-minute joy ride flight around the Sydney, Newcastle & Wollongong areas, alongside some gate activity at Sydney Airport with face painters, clown doctors, Matilda the Kangaroo, and a special visit from Santa Claus himself! A special thanks to Paralympian silver medalist Jamieson Leeson who joined us on the day.
Providing a pathway for Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) to the Qantas Group Pilot Academy. This new collaboration with AAFC gives cadets a preferential pathway to apply for the Qantas Group Pilot Academy based on their performance through initial applications, aiming to enhance their preparation and confidence for an aviation career. The Qantas Group Pilot Academy, based at Wellcamp Airport in Toowoomba, has been operating for close to five years and currently trains about 180 pilots a year for a future in the aviation industry.
