About us

The Queensland Academies Health Sciences Campus is one of three state schools for highly-capable students in Years 10 to 12. The campus is located on the Gold Coast, Australia and is the only school within the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct (GCHKP). This allows the Academy to provide unique opportunities and enrichment activities including working in partnership with Griffith University. Students are connected with professionals in the health sciences, research, science and academic industries, setting them up for success in their careers beyond the Academy.   • Vale Jane Sleeman Principal (2012-2018) and Foundation Deputy Principal (2008-2011), Queensland Academy for Health Sciences The QAHS learning community honours Jane Sleeman, thought leader, colleague and friend who passed away on 31 May 2024. Jane referenced her 11-year tenure as Deputy Principal and then Principal at the Gold Coast-based Queensland Academies Health Sciences (QAHS) campus as ‘the highlight of my career’. Indeed, Jane was part of the fabric of the innovative creation of Queensland Academies before the sod was turned, before the first concrete pour on the patch of land at the end of Edmund Rice Drive, adjacent to Griffith University, which is now part of the flourishing Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct. As Foundation Deputy Principal, Jane and the QAHS team were tasked with a new imagining for state schooling, a selective entry school for Queensland’s best and brightest students, preparing them for global futures through the delivery of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. A deep belief that every student is capable of successful learning characterised Jane’s leadership across Gold Coast schools. Having taught across a range of secondary subjects – including Japanese, Art, Science, Health and Physical Education, Design and Visual Communication – Jane brought to her leadership at QAHS important qualities that are part of her legacy in enhancing the Academy. Jane committed the Academy to an unwavering belief in the value of Positive Psychology as the supportive underpinning to academic performance. She could be found putting the actions behind the theory each year leading the charge in the Academy Cross Country, the rest of the staff and student body challenged to keep up with her. She also introduced QAHS to the wonders of Parkrun, a weekly 5km run she enjoyed in her local community each Saturday. Her prioritising and inspiring of positive, caring relationships between staff, students and parents, nurtured a strong, collegial culture based on trust. Across her career, Jane fostered innovation while providing unique opportunities and enrichment activities for students interested in a future in the health sciences, research, science or academia. Consequently, the bonds created during their time at QAHS have seen a strong cohort of alumni returning to the Academy as mentors, tutors, motivational speakers, leadership coaches and School Council members whilst they establish their paths in their careers and in their communities.
