This week in PTAANZ’s #TopTransportNews - Translink is making public transport more accessible and user-friendly with the continued rollout of Smart Ticketing across South East Queensland (SEQ) bus operators. This innovative system allows customers to pay seamlessly using smartphones, smartwatches, and debit cards, eliminating the need for a Go Card for participating services. The rollout is already underway, with operators like Hornibrook Bus Lines, Thompson Bus Services, Brisbane Bus Lines, and Kangaroo Bus Lines adopting the technology following successful trials on Caboolture Bus Lines and Kinetic Sunshine Coast. Customers have quickly embraced the new system, with over 100,000 trips completed since the initial launch. By simplifying the payment process, Smart Ticketing removes barriers to public transport use, encouraging more people to choose sustainable travel options and supporting a shift towards public transport. The rollout will continue to expand across the remaining SEQ bus and ferry operators in the coming months, further enhancing the travel experience and fostering greater connectivity across the network. 🌟 Transforming transport in NSW: Highlights from Secretary Josh Murray at the PTAANZ Annual Conference 🌟 At the PTAANZ Annual Conference in Sydney on 23 October, Josh Murray, Secretary of Transport for NSW, shared a bold vision for revolutionising transport across New South Wales. Here’s a recap of the key takeaways: 🚆 Transforming the Network - Metro, light rail, new ticketing technology, and timetable enhancements are creating safer, more reliable, and equitable transport options. - Over 250 capital projects are currently being delivered to meet the growing needs of passengers. 🌟 Metro Milestones - The Sydney Metro has seen 10 million passengers since August, with weekend usage tripling compared to pre-extension. - Mode-shift success: Multi-modal transport use has increased from 15% in July to 17% in September—a clear sign of changing travel behaviour. 🏗️ Building Communities Around Transport - The Redfern Station transformation demonstrates how even small investments can deliver big results: improved accessibility, safer connections, and a vibrant community link. This precinct uplift is paving the way for housing, education, and employment opportunities. 🔄 Restructuring for Better Outcomes - TfNSW's recent restructure prioritises operations, planning, and passenger needs under one umbrella. Streamlined decision-making and integrated teams are driving a public transport-first approach. 🎤 Fireside Chat with Sally Stannard, Director-General of the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and PTAANZ Chair - Secretary Murray highlighted the need to celebrate success with the workforce, from supporting 380,000 Taylor Swift fans to ensuring safe and efficient travel for all. ⚖ On fiscal constraints: Balancing large-scale projects with smaller, impactful investments—like refreshing aging infrastructure and improving passenger experiences—will help drive transformation. 🚦On breaking car dependency: A focus on innovative passenger experiences and precinct-based development will help shift habits, making public transport the natural choice for communities. 🚀 Looking Ahead Transport is playing a pivotal role in housing, sustainability, and economic growth. With new metro lines, rolling stock upgrades, and integrated services on the horizon, TfNSW is delivering meaningful change to improve lives across NSW. Let’s continue the conversation. Public transport will play a critical role in achieving Australia and New Zealand’s ambitions for net-zero emissions. At the PTAANZ Annual Conference in Sydney on 23 October, delegates heard from Ben McGarry, Principal, Decarbonisation at Aurecon, on lessons transport can learn from other sectors. Dr McGarry emphasised the need to adjust our traditional business cases and risk appetite to prepare for the future. Rapidly developing technology presents opportunities to identify and monetise co-benefits with other sectors and stakeholders. The Conference also included a panel discussion on using mode shift to achieve net zero, featuring: ➡ Jon Whelan, Chief Executive, Department for Infrastructure and Transport, South Australia ➡ Evelyn Storey, Director, Eminence & Sustainability, Aurecon ➡ Helen Rowe, Transport Program Impact Manager, Climateworks Centre ➡ Richard Denniss, Executive Director, The Australia Institute ➡ Natasha Santha, Partner, L.E.K. Consulting (moderator). 🌍 "We won’t decarbonise without changing behaviour. Mode shift is essential if we are to reach net zero." – Helen Rowe, Climateworks The discussion emphasised that while electric vehicles are part of the solution, we must also invest in active transport and public transport infrastructure to truly decarbonise and create sustainable cities. Ready to be part of the shift toward net-zero emissions? What steps can we take to encourage more people to choose public transport? Comment below with your thoughts on driving decarbonisation through mode shift! #NetZero #Decarbonisation #PublicTransport #ModeShift #PTAANZ

Metro Trains Melbourne, a PTAANZ Gold member, recently reached an important milestone of 15 years of the successful joint venture between MTR, John Holland and UGL. Metro has successfully partnered with stakeholders to modernise and transform the network, as well as supporting Victoria’s Big Build, and has delivered significant infrastructure upgrades to ensure that the railway can serve Melburnians for many years to come. Over the past 15 years, they’ve nearly tripled the number of women working at Metro and to mark their 15th Anniversary, their shareholders have contributed to a $1 million investment in a female facilities uplift program as they look to achieve a 40% female workforce by 2027. Happy Birthday Metro!

Perth’s bus network is about to receive a significant upgrade with the opening of METRONET’s Ellenbrook Line on 9 December 2024. Designed to better connect local communities with new METRONET stations, these changes will offer residents more travel options, increased frequency, and longer operating hours. Highlights of the updated network include: 🚍 New High-Frequency Services: Routes 386X, 950X, and 970X will offer limited-stop options during peak periods, replacing existing routes 385, 66, and 370. 🚍 Extended Coverage: Popular routes like 950 and 970 will be extended, while a new 975 route will connect Warwick, Mirrabooka, Morley, and Bayswater. 🚍 Expanded Capacity: 88 new buses will add five million service kilometres annually to the network. 🚍 Enhanced Connectivity: New and upgraded routes will improve east-west travel between the Yanchep and Ellenbrook lines and between Midland and Ellenbrook. Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA, Western Australia's Deputy Premier; Treasurer; and Minister for Transport; Tourism, emphasised the impact of these changes: "The Ellenbrook Line represents more than just a new train service—it brings transformative improvements to the bus networks in the north-east of our city, ensuring faster, more reliable, and better-connected public transport for the community." The new network also provides improved coverage for growing suburbs like Aveley, Henley Brook, and Upper Swan, along with increased capacity for schools. Improving frequency, reliability, and coverage are all key drivers in encouraging mode shift.
