Phillip Island will next year host the Phillip Island Pro in March next year, drawing elite surfers from around 10 countries in Asia and Oceania to Cape Woolamai. The event will run from March 17 to 22 and will be an important event for those wanting to compete in the 2025 Challenger Series and then qualify for the Championship Tour in 2026. It will also comprise the 2025 Australia/Oceania Pro Junior series with more than 100 of the region’s best 20-and-under surfers competing in the Phillip Island Pro Junior during the same week. The Phillip Island Pro is supported by the State Government's Regional Events Fund and will be delivered by Visit Victoria. Earlier this month, the World Surf League (WSL) and the Victorian Government announced the Bells Beach Longboard Classic, as part of the WSL Longboard Tour, has been secured through to 2027. The Federal Government has allocated $55 million to improve mobile connectivity and resilience in regional and remote areas prone to natural disasters. The funding is available under round eight of the Mobile Black Spot Program and is part of a co-funding deal with the telco industry. This round targets disaster-prone areas and aims to boost community safety and help locals get better assistance during and after a disaster. Local councils and parliamentarians are able to nominate areas or projects for funding consideration. Baw Baw Shire has been named among the growth areas where it will now be easier to build more homes on smaller parcels of land. The Victorian Government has changed the Small Lot Housing Code to smooth the way for different types of homes to be built in metropolitan and regional growth areas. This includes a new type of home that can be constructed on lots of less than 100 square metres without a permit. The Small Lot Housing Code applies to residential and mixed-use Precinct Structure Plans in Melbourne’s Urban Growth Zone, as well as special purpose zones in Baw Baw, Ballarat, Cardinia, Casey, Geelong, Hume, Knox, Melton, Mitchell, Whittlesea, and Wyndham. The change aims to increase housing diversity and affordability to help smaller families and single-person households to find homes that meet their needs. Good news for peri urban councils: a parliamentary inquiry has recommended the State Government look at establishing funds to support our fast-growing communities adjacent to the fringes of metropolitan Melbourne. This key finding of the Legislative Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee’s inquiry is welcome acknowledgement of the financial challenges caused by rapid population growth in peri urban areas. Peri urban municipalities are the gateway to regional Victoria and are growing quickly because they are close to Melbourne, but offer a relaxed, affordable lifestyle. It's now just a few weeks before many Victorians head off on their summer break. In peri urban areas, the holidays bring an influx of welcome visitors, but it also means heavy traffic and a heightened risk of vehicle accidents. Australia's road safety ministers met recently to discuss how improve safety on our roads and agree on priority actions. Boosting road safety through infrastructure projects was identified as a key priority. PUCV strongly supports continued investment in the road network, including through the Road Safety program. The Federal Government and the Victorian Government have announced free training for 5200 people looking for a career in the housing or construction industries. These additional fee-free TAFE and Vocational Education Training (VET) places promise to help address skills shortages and housing supply issues. The population of our member councils is expected to grow by more than 27% - or more than 53,700 people - by 2036. That means people with the skills needed by the housing and construction sector will likely be in high demand for some time to come.
