There was so much positivity in the room at ELACCA’s breakfast briefing at Parliament House in Canberra this week. Together, we explored the future of early childhood education and care in Australia, driven by a shared commitment to affordability, accessibility, and quality for every child and family. We were privileged to hear from the Productivity Commission’s Martin Stokie, on the recommendations to government on building a strong and equitable early learning system, including for the most vulnerable families. Minister Anne Aly inspired the room with her vision for a universal early childhood education system that is the envy of the world. She celebrated recent reforms, including a 15% wage increase for educators, but acknowledged that the journey is far from over. Thanks to Angie Bell for sharing heartfelt stories from families in regional Australia, which underscored the urgency of addressing barriers in underserved areas. Allegra Spender reminded us there is no better policy lever to break intergenerational disadvantage than investing in the early years. And Marielle Smith made a passionate call to maintain ambition for transformative reform in our sector. The provocation of the morning was this: let’s seize this opportunity to deliver the whole package of recommendations from the Productivity Commission, and work collaboratively to create real, lasting change for children, families, and communities. Today was day 4 of #NurtureModel training with our Australian colleagues. 🇦🇺 Tomorrow will be our final day before leaving to come home and it was an opportunity to celebrate, appreciate the learning and commitment they have demonstrated so far 👏. It’s been an intense week but we’ve learned that despite being on the opposite side of the world, we have much in common regarding care and education in the early years. This has been an incredible opportunity and we have been so welcomed by everybody. With relationships and connection being a key part of our approach, it is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when we collaborate and share our knowledge and experiences with each other. We kicked off with a surprise performance from 13-year-old Poppy, a talented bagpiper, playing You’re the Voice—what a way to energise the room! The morning was then filled with inspiring sessions from Caroline Wright MBE BPhil Early Years Executive/Director, Michelle Demirtas, and Melanie Fisher from Bright Horizons UK. Their passionate presentations on brain development, regulation, and the glitter jar technique had everyone hooked.
