Every year in Australia, millions of years of healthy life are lost because of injury, illness or premature deaths. This loss of healthy life is called the ‘burden of disease’. The Australian Burden of Disease Study 2024, conducted by the AIHW, includes national estimates for 220 diseases and injuries in 2024 based on projections using historical trends in data. It also includes estimates of the disease burden attributed to 20 individual risk factors in 2024. Information on burden of disease and injuries is important for monitoring population health and provides an evidence base to inform health policy and service planning. Congratulations Richard Crookes!! 🌟 Richard has been awarded the Champion Award at the annual Lord Mayoral Awards hosted by the City of Darwin on the International Day of People with Disability. 👏 A stroke survivor himself, Richard is an advocate for improved accessibility and has long called for disability ramps at fishing spots and increased wheelchair parking across the Territory. 🫶 His tireless efforts in improving the lives of stroke survivors and their families has not gone unnoticed and it’s so great to see his outstanding efforts in supporting people with disabilities is being recognised. 👍 Thank you for all that you do in the Top End! 🙌

Congratulations to this year's Stroke Foundation Research Grants recipients, Dr Lloyd LY Chan, PT, PhD, Dr Taylor Jenkin, Dr Kelly Miles and Brooke Parsons. Stroke Foundation is immensly proud of the work being undertaken by this wonderful group of researchers and people with lived experience. Their research will go a long way in changing the lives of survivors of stroke and their families. For the first time in this grants program, people with lived experience of stroke have been awarded Future Leader Grants. The grant is designed to support their development as emerging leaders in research. Stroke Foundation Research Advisory Committee Chair, Prof. Coralie English, says this is an exciting milestone. “It is critical that researchers work in partnership with people with lived experience of stroke to ensure the work that we do will make a real difference in people’s lives. The Stroke Foundation has a proud history of being early adopters in the field of lived experience co-design. Offering a Future Leader Grant specifically targeted to someone with lived experience of stroke further demonstrates our commitment to excellence in lived experience research partnerships.” Stroke Foundation’s Research Grants program has awarded more than $6.7 million in grants to 225 researchers since 2008. We were proud to support Ambulance Victoria and The Royal Melbourne Hospital this past weekend to help launch the second Mobile Stroke Unit (MSU) - a vital and groundbreaking resource that delivers immediate, on-site stroke care to patients. ✌
A second Mobile Stroke Unit (MSU) has hit the road in Melbourne’s south-east, expanding access to revolutionary pre-hospital care for stroke patients. The new vehicle is based in Dandenong, adding to the first MSU which operates within 20 kilometres of The Royal Melbourne Hospital. The MSUs are custom-built, specialist vehicles that allow stroke patients to receive hospital-grade assessment and treatment in the field, rather than waiting to arrive at a hospital. They are fitted with the latest diagnostic technology including a CT scanner, telemedicine equipment and mobile laboratory - and are staffed by special stroke teams consisting of a neurologist, stroke nurse, radiographer and two paramedics. The crews also have virtual on-board access to a stroke neurologist based at the RMH. A person suffers a stroke every 19 minutes in Australia and it’s one of Victoria’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability. With stroke, every minute counts, and the sooner paramedics arrive, and treatment begins, the better one’s chance of surviving and maintaining a good quality of life. F.A.S.T. signs of stroke account for 80 percent of stroke symptoms: F - Check their FACE. Has their mouth drooped? A - Can they lift both ARMS? S - Is their SPEECH slurred? Do they understand you? T - TIME is critical. If you see any of these signs, call 000 immediately. Read more about it here: https://bit.ly/3Zrgk0w

We're excited to share Federal Health Minister Mark Butler's opening address at the National Hypertension Taskforce's recent inaugural Hypertension Summit. Launched in 2022, the National Hypertension Taskforce is tackling the issue of managing high blood pressure in Australia with the aim of increasing Australia’s blood pressure control rate from 32 per cent to 70 per cent by 2030. The taskforce brings together leaders in the health sector, including Stroke Foundation, Heart Foundation, Hypertension Australia, Australian Cardiovascular Alliance, The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and Kidney Health Australia. Full session recordings from the Hypertension Summit will be gradually released, so keep an eye out on the Taskforce's website. #hypertensiontaskforce Check out the video here: https://lnkd.in/g4fih47U
