Vanessa’s home gets dangerously hot in the summer, it's been so bad she has passed out. She’s a peer educator for Housing for the Aged Action Group, and after a year of fighting she was finally able to get an air conditioner installed with their support. But Vanessa faces another challenge… paying for her energy bills. ACOSS in partnership with the First Nations Clean Energy Network and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Association is running a survey capturing the impacts of heat on people experiencing financial stress, to form the basis of a report to be shared with the media. If you’re struggling to cool your home in hot weather, will you complete the survey? https://lnkd.in/gK5zc3xJ

As the weather heats up, many people receiving lower incomes are forced to live in hot boxes that are making them sick. That’s why ACOSS in partnership with the First Nations Clean Energy Network and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Association (NATSIHA) is running a survey capturing the impacts of heat on people experiencing financial stress, to form the basis of a report to be shared with the media. Housing Australia today opened the Call for Applications for State and Territory Governments to participate in Funding Round Two of the Federal Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund Facility (HAFFF) to expedite the delivery of more well-located social housing. Housing Australia will work closely with State and Territory housing agencies, with the aim to deliver up to 5,000 social dwellings across Australia. The model for Funding Round Two strongly encourages collaboration between State and Territory Governments, Community Housing Providers (CHPs) and other eligible organisations that provide social housing. The Call for Applications for Funding Round Two is now open and will close on Friday 31 January 2025, at 12 noon AEDT. Great to meet Thi in her new home in Casula last week, with my friend Anne Stanley, member for Werriwa. Thi's is one of more than 60 superb and sustainable social homes -- thank you for showing me around. We're investing in thousands more social homes like Thi's through our Social Housing Accelerator and the Housing Australia Future Fund, because more homes means more affordable housing.

CEO at Community Housing Industry Association (CHIA)

Great news and the Community Housing Industry Association very much welcomes the government's commitment to (1) expediting round three of HAFF and (2) the establishment of a dedicated working group with community housing peak organisations to facilitate sector engagement. As our chair Chris Smith GAICD says 'With Rounds 1 and 2 set to deliver nearly 19,000 social and affordable homes, we're seeing real momentum in addressing Australia's housing shortfall. The key now is to maintain and build upon this progress through sustained, coordinated action across all levels of government'. Looking forward to seeing the results. Housing Australia, Clare O'Neil

CHIA has strongly endorsed today's announcement of a new partnership between the Commonwealth, states and territories, and community housing providers, to deliver 5,000 additional social homes under an accelerated Round 2 of the HAFF. "This announcement unlocks an additional $3 billion investment and demonstrates the government's commitment to addressing the rental crisis,” said CHIA CEO Wendy Hayhurst. “Coming just three months after the landmark round one announcement that will house over 25,000 Australians, this is very welcome." "We are particularly pleased to see the government's strong encouragement for states and territories to partner with community housing providers in delivering these homes. Our sector has consistently demonstrated its capacity to leverage government investment to create additional social and affordable housing supply. BREAKING: The Albanese Government we’re partnering with States and Territories to deliver up to 5,000 new social homes under a fast-track Round 2 of Labor’s Housing Australia Future Fund. This partnership is expected to unlock up to $3 billion in new investment in social housing across Australia, creating thousands of new construction jobs. With Australians doing it tough, this partnership will support thousands of Australians to get into social housing, helping reduce homelessness and taking pressure off rents. We're building more homes for renters, homes for first-home buyers, homes for the most vulnerable in our community, because the more homes we build, the more affordable housing becomes.

Together with Dr Miriam Glennie, I am proud to be releasing this needed work exploring rough sleeping in Tasmania. Thank you to all those who participated directly and the many who provided support and engagement along the way. Our hope is that this report helps spur on a Housing First pilot for Tasmania. It is also the case that due to the broadening of rough sleeping across a range of cohorts and the scale of rough sleeping around the state, a Housing First pilot will be just one relevant response to consider. The expansion of specialist outreach and tenancy support services are key broader responses to focus on alongside Housing First which involves the delivery of housing with wrap-around clinical support for those experiencing chronic rough sleeping. It is also our hope that a Housing First pilot can become one leading edge of cross-agency collaboration on rough sleeping involving the Department of Health, Tasmania. Increased provision of healthcare, in particular mental health care, across the homelessness sector in Tasmania is urgently needed. Our thanks to the University of Tasmania which funded this work through the Homelessness ColLAB: https://lnkd.in/gPM6MAWH

You might have heard about “Build to Rent.” It’s a housing model that puts renters’ security and convenience at the heart of it with long 5 year lease options and in-built facilities. It’s been described by industry and the community housing sector as a “gamechanger” that will create a “pipeline of genuinely affordable housing” over the next few years, and it’s been opposed by the Liberals every step of the way. And after some changes we made a week or two ago, there’ll be a lot more of it across the country. 80,000 more homes to be precise. That’s why it was great to join Peter Khalil to view a new project in his electorate yesterday which is creating almost 500 new homes for renters. Australians are doing it really tough on housing but we’ve laid the right foundations to address this crisis and have got lots more work to do.

"...a gamechanger..." "... more significant than any other effort made by a federal government to address the rental deficit in this country." "...a pipeline of genuinely affordable housing..." These are some of the descriptions from the housing industry of Labor's policy to unlock 80,000 rental properties across the country. We want more homes to make housing more affordable, and that's what this will do
