A new space for art, culture and community in the heart of Bengaluru

About us

At the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP), Bengaluru, our mission is to harness the transformative potential of art, to enrich lives, ignite creativity, and connect people. We make art accessible and engaging for everyone through innovative experiences, meaningful dialogue and building communities. Located in the heart of the city, MAP is home to a growing collection of paintings, sculptures, textiles, photographs, popular culture and more, dating from the 10th century to the present day. The museum spans 6 storeys and includes art galleries, digital experience centres, a dedicated research and conservation lab as well as a shop, cafe, member’s lounge and rooftop alfresco restaurant. MAP is a melting pot of ideas, stories and cultural exchange where we hope to encourage humanity, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the world we live in, through art. Designed by Mathew & Ghosh, the building features a strong focus on accessibility, to support people with disabilities who visit the museum. Designed with steel panels that are embossed with a cross pattern, the facade of the building resembles an industrial water tank, which is meant to bring out the metaphorical connection between the idea of storing something precious: in this case, art. The simple and unique design, material, transparency, and opacity of the building make it an architectural icon in the city of Bengaluru. MAP is proud to announce that we have been awarded with the 15th NCPEDP-Mphasis Universal Design Awards 2024 under the Role Model Companies & Organizations. The National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People, New Delhi recognises our exceptional contributions towards creating inclusive and accessible environments, and setting remarkable standards in universal design.

  • William Dalrymple makes history come alive at MAP! This week we had the pleasure of hosting the acclaimed author and had the opportunity to show him around the galleries. Reflecting on his visit to MAP he said: “This visit has been long in the planning...it's fantastic to see how magnificently it has played out. I particularly enjoyed all the videos and clever use of graphics in the digital displays. MAP really is magical.” We wish him all the best for his latest book, The Golden Road and hope to see him again at the museum soon! #WilliamDalrymple #MAPBangalore #author #BehindTheScenes

Art isn’t just to be seen; it’s to be shared, celebrated, and co-created! 🎨✨ Let’s rewind to the PRCAI Dialogues at Bangalore’s Museum of Art and Photography (MAP) which was all about art, storytelling, and the magic of collaboration. Here’s what made it unforgettable: 💡 The PRCAI community explored how artists, brands, and corporations can come together to co-create change. Art isn’t just for preserving, it’s for inspiring action and uniting voices. 💡 While museums like MAP conserve and showcase masterpieces, communicators and PR professionals are the storytellers who bring these narratives to the world. 💡 Corporate investments in art are important, but it is strong communication strategies that build appreciation and engagement. The event kicked off with a unique Digital Lamp Lighting ceremony and offered insights from Abhishek Poddar, Founder of MAP, Harinarayan Sharma, CEO of Manipal Foundation, in a discussion moderated by Nidhi Agarwal, Founder of Ebony & Ivory PR. From the art to the conversations, this was storytelling on a whole new level and we’re just getting started! Stay tuned for more exciting PRCAI Dialogues. You would not want to miss what’s coming next! Deeptie Sethi Girish Balachandran #PRCAIDialogues #InfluencingPRogress #MAPBangalore

On this International Day of People with Disabilities, we pause to reflect on the voices, stories, and insights shared during the Museum of Art and Photography (MAP) Bangalore’s Annual Inclusion Conference, held on 15th November 2024. We had the privilege of participating as the conference partner and as part of the audience in this gathering that brought together perspectives from across sectors, urging us to rethink how cultural institutions could become truly inclusive—not just for people with disabilities (PwD) but for the diverse communities they serve. From panel discussions to the interactive Shared Experiences session (facilitated by us), the conference created spaces alive with honesty—stories of challenges, triumphs, and the hope that comes from shared understanding. The voices of PwD, in particular, illuminated the profound gaps and opportunities for creating cultural spaces that are not only accessible but also empowering. We witnessed moments of quiet revelation, where participants’ words built bridges between lived experiences and the aspirations of the broader community. Being part of this event reinforced that inclusion is not simply about access; it’s about dignity, representation, and belonging. It demands empathy, collaboration, and a willingness to unlearn. How do we move beyond tokenistic gestures to foster sustained engagement with all communities including people with disabilities? How do we ensure that spaces meant for everyone are shaped by the perspectives of everyone? These were some of the vital questions that emerged from discussions on topics like inclusive programming, adaptive curation, and the role of technology in access. As we reflect on our small role in this larger effort, we carry forward the questions posed, the insights shared, and the connections formed. We look forward to continuing this conversation—step by step, story by story—towards cultural spaces that embrace the fullness of our shared humanity. • MAPing the Team: Spotlight on Kusuma S, Merchandise Designer & Coordinator Ever wondered who brings the museum's art to life on products you can take home? Meet Kusuma S, our talented Merchandise Designer & Coordinator. "When you think of a museum, the things that come to mind immediately are art, curators, and archivists. Merchandise might not be the first thing that springs up. I used to think of merchandise only in the context of fashion. But here at MAP, we're blending art and product design in a truly unique way." Kusuma's role is a fascinating blend of creativity and coordination. She takes popular artworks from our South Asian art collection and transforms them into stunning products. "It's exciting to experiment with different mediums like paper, fabric, and ceramics. Each artwork has its own personality, and the challenge is to find the perfect product match. Sometimes, an artwork that looks amazing on canvas might not translate well onto a tote bag. That's where the fun of sampling and testing comes in. Beyond design, I also coordinate with manufacturers to develop proofs, oversee production, and ensure the quality and consistency of each item before it reaches the store shelves.” When asked about her favourite product, Kusuma immediately mentions the "Rani Ticket" series. “There’s this one artwork called Rani ticket which I love! I don’t know why but that particular artwork looks good on any product. As playing cards, tote bags, posters, it just seems to stand out and is definitely a crowd favourite” The Rani Ticket is a captivating chromolithograph created by Blackwood & Co. in India during the late 19th or early 20th century. Kusuma also highlights the joy of working with the artworks of Madan Meena and Jamini Roy. "Their playful and versatile styles lend themselves perfectly to product design. It's a real privilege to bring their work to a wider audience." When asked about her inspiration she says, “I find inspiration for my creativity in the colours, textures, and objects I encounter every day. Walking into MAP for the first time, I was awed by the art and creativity that fills the space and it motivated me to grow, contribute, and see art from fresh perspectives.” For those interested in a career in merchandise design, Kusuma offers this advice: "Ideally you should have a background in graphic design; but it is important to have an open mind in terms of creativity, don’t restrict yourself to one form.” Beyond her work, Kusuma loves the inspiring environment at MAP. "The beautiful office space and constant exposure to art make it an ideal place to work. It's a dream come true for any art and design enthusiast." To learn more about career opportunities at MAP or to ask Kusuma a question, leave a comment below. • Last week we said bye bye to Bhuri Bai! A Padma Shri winning artist, her team and her brought much cheer and colour to MAP this last month as they created a beautiful mural on the boundary wall. Bhuri Bai is a Bhopal-based artist who grew up in Pithol, a remote village at the border of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The first woman from her community (the Bhils) to paint on paper and canvas, her paintings are characterised by the use of bright colours and human forms embellished with tightly placed dots. The new MAP mural features depictions of animals, village life and even namma metro, all in her signature pithora style of painting with vivid colours. Come to MAP and check out our unique new mural and tell us what you think! https://lnkd.in/eiVtR2Pq
