Photography and astronomy have a long association at Sydney Observatory. Observatory Hill has long been a place for people to connect with, observe, understand and tell stories about Sky Country, starting with the Gadigal who carved knowledge about Sky and Sea Country into local rock. Henry Chamberlain Russell, the resident Government Astronomer, began photographing the sky from Sydney Observatory in the early 1870s. His photographs of the Magellanic Clouds were internationally acclaimed. This tradition of photographic observation continues today in Southern Sky Astrophotography. See the Southern Sky astrophotography 2024 exhibition on now at Sydney Observatory. https://lnkd.in/gfBbXeun

Powerhouse Parramatta has celebrated another major construction milestone with the topping out of the east building of the museum, bringing the completion of Australia’s most exciting new cultural landmark a step closer. Attended by Powerhouse Parramatta Trustees and campaign donors, the topping out included the symbolic placement of an Australian pine tree on top of the building’s structure, a construction tradition that signifies the completion of a building’s highest point. This achievement marks the culmination of a series of significant milestones for Powerhouse Parramatta in 2024 including the completion of all three building cores, the structural formation of six out of the seven exhibition spaces and the installation of the exoskeleton up to Level 4 of both buildings which equated to the use of 600 tonnes of steel every month. In addition, six of the eight escalators have been installed, and two of the three link bridges connecting the eastern and western buildings are now complete. Thanks to Sean Tarek Goodwin for sharing this news with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) viewers last night. Lendlease Infrastructure NSW Donna Davis Bruno Zinghini (GAICD)

"The most unifying force is food … [and] we want to create a safe space for people to share their rich, important stories of migration, their intergenerational recipes, and their culture,” Kylie Kwong says. Kylie Kwong’s next chapter begins in the western Sydney suburb of Harris Park, where the acclaimed Australian-Chinese chef will co-host a series of six bi-monthly dinners to showcase the “deeply delicious” diversity of Indian cuisine. Powerhouse is thrilled to announce a series of dinners in Sydney's Little India curated and hosted by Powerhouse Associate Kylie Kwong and Bhavna Shivalkar at Harris Park restaurants Chatkazz, Adyar Ananda Bhavan, Mitran Da Dhaba and IndoChainese. "With many major museums squeezed for exhibition and display space, it’s common for the bulk of extensive archives and collections to be kept behind closed doors. Enter Powerhouse Castle Hill, the storehouse for Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum." In collaboration with The Writing and Society Research Centre at Western Sydney University, we're excited to unveil Parramatta Profiles, a captivating writing series about inspiring people making a difference to Parramatta and Greater Western Sydney. Written by talented literature and creative writing students from Western Sydney University, this series offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of those who contribute to the rich tapestry of this dynamic region. Drawing from diverse fields such as art, music, religion, activism and sport, each of the 12 profiles captures a snapshot of the unique lives and experiences that shape the cultural landscape of Parramatta, home to some of Australia’s most vibrant and diverse communities. This collaborative initiative not only shines a spotlight on these remarkable individuals but also supports the development of student writers. The series is part of the broader Powerhouse Writing initiative, which integrates storytelling into the museum’s framework and deepens engagement with the communities and landscapes of Powerhouse Parramatta.
