An 18-month-old born with a genetic condition that affects only 20 people worldwide has undergone a ‘life-changing’ operation thanks to a Mater surgeon.   Ocie Ni Dheasmhunaigh was born at South Brisbane’s Mater Mothers’ Hospital with IMAGe syndrome, a condition that includes characteristics of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), metaphyseal dysplasia (a genetic bone disorder) and adrenal hypoplasia congenita (a disorder that affects the adrenal glands). Ocie weighs just 4kg and is unable to stand due to hip dysplasia. Orthopaedic surgeon Dr David Bade recently performed two surgeries at Mater Children’s Private Hospital Brisbane on Ocie to repair her hip dysplasia, which will enable her to finally stand unassisted and eventually take her first steps.   Read more about Ocie’s story here - mater.li/Ocie

After 53 years of caring for people as a diabetes and endocrinology clinical nurse consultant, Marina Noud is hanging up her stethoscope 🩺 Marina's compassionate care and dedication to patient wellbeing have left an indelible mark on her colleagues as well as countless patients. She was instrumental in introducing patients to the Australian Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (OzDAFNE) program for people living with type 1 diabetes, transforming and improving the lives of people living with the condition. It’s official ❗ The theatre expansion project at Mater Private Hospital Redland is completed. Dr Tim Beckman was the first clinician to use the newly upgraded eye procedure room, which was the final piece of the expansion program of works. A Mackay mum diagnosed with cervical cancer while pregnant says she owes her life to her baby, Harry 👶💙 Teharnee Peel, 34, was diagnosed with a 6.5cm cancerous mass in her cervix while she was 22 weeks pregnant. Mrs Peel, who is now in remission, received specialised cancer treatment by Senior Medical Oncologist Dr Catherine Shannon at Mater Cancer Care Centre at South Brisbane. Throughout chemotherapy and a planned caesarean section birth, Mrs Peel said her sole focus was on ensuring Harry was healthy and arrived safely. “He was our first baby and I wanted to do everything I could to save his life,” she said.
