We are one of the largest geographically spread road agencies in the world, responsible for more than 18,500 kilometres of road spread over 2.5 million square kilometres. Our role is to plan, build and maintain Western Australia’s State Road Network valued at just over $46 billion. We work closely with our portfolio partners, Department of Transport and Public Transport Authority as well as local government to support the needs of all road users across the state by providing an integrated world-class road transport network. Our services are delivered through the dedicated efforts of our employees who are located in ten regional and several metropolitan offices throughout the State.   • 🎉 The new Smart Freeway Mitchell Southbound is being switched on this Sunday, 22 December! The new technology on Mitchell Freeway southbound from Hester Avenue to Vincent Street includes: 🚦 Co-ordinated ramp signals on all 16 southbound on-ramps ❌ Overhead electronic signs displaying speed limits and temporary lane closures in response to changes in traffic conditions ⚠️ Electronic message boards advising drivers of road conditions ahead 🚗 Emergency stopping bays for breakdowns and incidents 💡 Other technologies to allow for the safe operational management of the freeway The introduction of this technology on Mitchell Freeway southbound aims to increase safety, improve efficiency, and enhance the reliability of the road transport network.   • The New Brooking Channel Bridge opened a month ago, just 156 days after the old bridge was demolished! 🧱👷♀️ The new two-lane bridge is an essential addition to the Great Northern Highway, improving safety and strengthening supply chain resilience in the north of the state. 🛣 Importantly, this project has been built in partnership with the local community, with 170 local workers getting involved in construction, as well as structured training and mentoring programs. 🛠

  • The Tonkin Gap Project and Associated Works has continued to be acknowledged for its excellence in sustainability, construction, and community initiatives. In the last six months, the project achievements have been recognised in several local and national industry awards: 🥇 ‘Best Civil Engineering Works’ for projects valued over $100 million at the Master Builders Awards 🥇 Winner of the category ‘Project Value over $150 million’ at the Civil Contractors Federation (CCF) WA Earth Awards 🥇 Winner of the category ‘Project Value over $150 million’ at the CCF National Earth Awards The project was fast-tracked to help drive the COVID-19 economic recovery, delivered two major projects under the one contract. Through the collaborative efforts between Main Roads and the Public Transport Authority, the Project removed a well-known traffic bottleneck, improved traffic flow and safety and enhanced facilities for cyclists, pedestrians, and the community, along with rail-enabling works for the METRONET’s Morley-Ellenbrook Line.   • 🚌 RIDE WITH PRIDE 🚌 🌈Teams from across Main Roads, the Public Transport Authority, and the Department of Transport celebrated visibility across our State’s transport network showing that everyone is welcome however they engage with our transport services. 🚨 Led by a Main Roads Heavy Vehicle Escort and backed up by the Transperth Rainbow Bus we went with a theme that demonstrated that no matter the roads you drive on, the licence you hold, or the bus, train, or ferry you jump on – you can RIDE WITH PRIDE right across the whole of Western Australia. 🙌🏼 For the third consecutive year the Transport Portfolio was one of 106 floats and more than 5000 other marchers through the streets of Northbridge supporting and celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • 🏆 Award Winning Project 🎉 The Causeway Link Alliance won the 'Planning with Country' Award for the Causeway Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridges project at the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) WA State Awards for Planning Excellence awards evening held on Friday 8 November 2024 The award recognises projects that promote collaboration, understanding, appreciation, awareness and celebrates Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander knowledge, culture and tradition and their application to planning and land management.   The award also recognises projects that advance or address the needs and aspirations of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples involved in the project.  Design of the Causeway Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridges, now known as Boorloo Bridge, was informed by accurate cultural narrative of the area from the Matagarup Elders Group over three years. Five Noongar artists are creating public art for the areas around the new bridges which will 'reflect Noongar culture and connections, both ancient and contemporary. Main Roads Project Director Mike Kapitola accepted the award on behalf of the Causeway Link Alliance and Matagarup Elders Group. The project will now compete with winners from other States for the National PIA Awards held next year. We look forward to the grand opening of the Boorloo Bridge on Sunday 22 December 2024!
