Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Member for Maitland

About us

The Hon. Jenny Aitchison is the Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Maitland in the NSW Parliament. Jenny held various portfolios in opposition over a period of seven years including the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Small Business, Primary Industries, Investment and Tourism, and Medical Research and Regional Transport and Roads. She also acted in the Women’s portfolio for a year. Jenny was Chair of the NSW Branch of Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians for four years from 2015 to 2019 and Deputy National Chair from 2017-2019. Prior to entering Parliament, Jenny had been an award winning small business owner in the tourism and transport industry for nearly twenty years and was the foundation President of the Women's Network Hunter (NSW). As a fast-growing region Maitland needs a passionate advocate. With the support of unions and her local community, Jenny led and won a 7 year local campaign against the privatisation of the new Maitland Hospital as part of the Liberals and Nationals plans to privatise five hospitals across the state. Jenny has been a longtime campaigner for safer and more efficient roads and transport infrastructure. Jenny provided a great deal of support assistance to members of the Maitland community after the storms which ravaged the city in April 2015 and the many other natural disasters across Maitland and NSW since then. Jenny lobbied for crucial Category C funding for rural properties to be extended to small farmers to continue their businesses. In visits around the state she has connected victims of natural disasters with health, housing and community services both during the crisis and afterwards.

  • I want to thank everyone who has reached out to support me as the NSW Nurses and Midwives' Association have engaged in personal attacks against me over the last week. Facts Matter. The truth is, I have always supported nurses and midwives both professionally and personally. I have three aunts who were nurses and a sister who is still nursing. I campaigned for ten years to ensure that the new Maitland Hospital was a fully public hospital alongside all health workers, to ensure better patient outcomes and better wages and conditions for nurses, midwives and other hospital staff. I campaigned for safe staffing levels to ensure more nurses and midwives in our hospitals. In the last 2 years we have increased staffing levels in the new Maitland Hospital by 10 per cent, growing by 121 full time equivalent staff between July 2023 and September 2024. Maitland Hospital’s new Emergency Department Short Stay Unit (EDSSU) has increased its capacity to now operate seven days a week to take the pressure off our hardworking nurses in the ED. When the previous Coalition Government left 1,112 nurses unfunded from 1 July this year, including 138 in our local health district, the Minns Labor Government saved their jobs and made them permanent. In Opposition, I campaigned against the wages cap which saw nurses and midwives only get 2.5 per cent from the former government and ZERO payrises during COVID. I am proud to be part of a government that has smashed the wages cap and is continuing to negotiate with our hard working nurses and midwives, while already having paid them a pay increase that is larger than what they received in any year under the former Liberals and Nationals Government. There is no one size fits all approach to industrial negotiations, and as I said to the nurses and midwives staff I met with last week, we should be able to make our points respectfully, and I undertook to advocate for them, as I always have and will continue to do. I love nurse and midwives and I value and support the work they do every single day.

  • Australia’s largest rail freight operator, Aurizon, has a national level crossing campaign underway which urges the community - motorists, truck drivers and pedestrians - to take notice of the signs at level crossings that are there for everyone’s protection. The key message is: Respect the sign. Lives are on the line. I appreciate the efforts by Aurizon to bring education and awareness to this critical safety matter.

  • As we enter the final days of 2024 and ring in the new year we'll be sharing with you details of some key work the Minns Labor Government has been getting done for NSW. In my role as Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, improving support for communities who've had their roads and bridges damaged by natural disasters, has been a key priority.

  • Double demerits for the Christmas/New Year period start at midnight tonight and continue until 11:59pm, Wednesday 1 January 2025. NSW Police Force will target speeding, illegal mobile phone use, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences this holiday period. Sadly, six people died as a result of crashes on our roads during the Christmas and New Year double demerit period last year. I urge everyone to obey the road rules and make safe decisions every time they’re behind the wheel, so everyone can reach their destinations safely to enjoy the holidays with their loved ones. Every choice you make on the road can save lives. #SafetyNeverTakesAHoliday https://lnkd.in/gD2Hmyny

  • This weekend we’re expecting thousands of motorists to hit the road and head to the regions to make the most of the Christmas holidays.  We want everyone to have a happy and safe holiday, and tragically we’ve seen 330 fatalities on our roads in NSW in 2024. One life lost is one too many, so slow down and make sure you’re doing the right thing.   Double demerits will be in place for speeding, motorcycle helmet, seatbelt and mobile phone offences from Friday 20 December 2024 to Wednesday 1 January 2025.  This is always one of the busiest periods on our road network and we’ll have dedicated staff working around the clock to make that journey as smooth as possible so that everyone arrives at their destination safely. https://lnkd.in/eFTnh-Fs

  • The NSW Government has released the first two of its nine draft Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plans. Community members can now review the Hunter and South East and Tablelands draft plans which outline a vision for regional transport where communities are more better connected by high quality road and transport infrastructure and services.

  • The Minns Labor Government is encouraging farmers to take part in a trial that exempts vehicles used to fight fires from registration, in a move that supports rural landholders this bush fire season. Under the trial, participants can nominate a Farm Fire Fighting Vehicle (FFFV), or a vehicle used for firefighting purposes, to respond to emergency bush fire incidents on public roads within 100km of their home. FFFVs might be utility vehicles fitted out with hoses and other firefighting equipment. Typically, these vehicles are not used outside the farm, so registering them can seem unnecessary. Many farmers and rural landholders play an important role in fighting fires on their own or neighbouring properties, especially before emergency services arrive.
