Last week the Institute of Public Administration Australia WA (IPAA WA) hosted the 2024 Achievement Awards. It is incredibly inspiring to see over 700 public service professionals come together to celebrate the incredible projects and initiatives delivering such important outcomes for our WA community, and some of the people behind them. Thank you to all the delegates, dedicated judges, and everyone who submitted a nomination this year from our exceptional public service. I would like to express my gratitude to the IPAA WA Patron and Governor of WA, His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM FIPAA, for taking the time to join us again this year and recognise the great accomplishments of the WA public service. I also would like to extend my gratitude to the IPAA WA co Vice-Patrons: the Honourable Roger Cook MLA, Premier of Western Australia’s representative to present at the awards, Parliamentary Secretary Jessica Shaw MLA, and the other co Vice-Patron Mr Shane Love MLA, Leader of the Opposition. The 2024 IPAA WA Achievement Awards celebration is an incredible way to end the year, and I am always taken aback hearing about the public service’s outstanding achievements. As a community we need to recognise the great work the public service does. My warmest congratulations go to all the winners this year, and in particular this year’s recipient of the IPAA Patron’s Award, the highest accolade in public administration in WA, Gail McGowan, PSM. A full list of winners and photos from the day are available on our website at https://lnkd.in/gh-rDRm8 This year we trialled a new initiative to provide award winners with the opportunity to say a few words in relation to their award win via a video message to celebrate beyond the ceremony’s proceedings. We will share and publish these in the new year so you can hear more about the exceptional public service we have in WA. I wish you a happy festive season and new year.

Yesterday the Institute of Public Administration Australia WA (IPAA WA) program delivered a huge day filled with incredible insights and a brand-new initiative we will be bringing to our members soon. We started the morning with an intimate session which explored unearthing digital skills and building workforce capability, where Jerome C., Veronica Holmes and Damian Koh explored the opportunities and tools required to overcome the skills gap and deliver digital transformation sooner. Building on this, our first ever podcast featured a conversation between YPC Chair, Mikaela Scuderi and Deloitte's Veronica Holmes about ‘Skills Based’ Organisations. The afternoon session, 'Danjoo Koorliny: Working with Aboriginal Businesses', featured an incredible line-up of speakers. We were honoured to hear from two Danjoo Koorliny co-directors, Dr. Richard Walley OAM and Carol Innes AM who spoke about the philosophical and practical considerations when working with Aboriginal organisations. They shared valuable insights into the economic systems which were in place pre-colonisation, and how Danjoo Koorliny are working to bring this ancient knowledge into the modern business world. Following on from them, a panel discussion and presentations featuring Catherine Holland, Dennis Kickett, Les Oakley and Frank Mitchell shared practical ways the WA Government can work, and are working, with Aboriginal businesses. They provided some fantastic examples of successful collaborations which Main Roads Western Australia have been undertaking. Finally, the workshop facilitated by Carol and the Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together team brought all delegates together to answer and share their experiences, thoughts, and ideas on what good collaboration looks like. Thank you to all the speakers today who shared their knowledge and expertise. It is always inspiring to hear from such highly respected community leaders as well as those who are on the ground working closely with Aboriginal businesses. Thank you also to all the guests who took the time to attend the sessions today and finally, to our MC for the day, Christine Thompson. Events such as these remind me how lucky I am to lead an organisation that works to deliver these all important messages to the public service.
