Today, I had the privilege of being part of Inner Sydney Voice’s 50th anniversary celebration at the annual Marg Barry Memorial Lecture. The evening was a poignant reflection on ISV's rich history, highlighting its evolution from a grassroots movement of concerned citizens in 1974 to a driving force in shaping a fairer society. Hearing from past and present change-makers was inspiring. I particularly enjoyed listening to Andrew Jakubowicz speak about the early days of community mobilisation and the power of collaboration. The event was filled with a sense of shared purpose, it was incredible to see so many people, from veterans to newcomers, united in their dedication to creating a more just and equitable society. I left feeling energised and optimistic about ISV's future. I have no doubt it will continue to play a vital role in shaping a better future for our city - and I am proud to play a (small) part in it. This celebration was a fitting tribute to ISV's legacy and an inspiring call to action for all. Don Perlgut Joseph Ferrer Gary Jacobson #advocacy #socialjustice #communityaction

We paused today to remember the women whose lives were stolen due to Domestic and Family Violence. "Unite Against Violence: No More Empty Shoes" is a one-day installation in Martin Place featuring pairs of shoes—each pair representing a woman who has lost her life to domestic or family violence in Australia. Gendered violence is a national crisis that has claimed the life of a woman every 4 days in Australia. Domestic and Family Violence homicide accounts for a majority of these cases. We have so much work to do. Thank you to Lou's PLace for hosting this event and honouring these women's lives alongside Hope + Heal, Domestic Violence NSW, Muslim Women Australia, Full Stop Australia, SSI, @Moving Forward, City of Sydney, and Dress for Success NSW & ACT. #16daysofactivism

NSW Parliament passed the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill 2024 (the Bill) at the end of October 2024 – a momentous occasion for NSW renters, and why we haven't stopped celebrating most especially the end to 'no grounds' evictions. However, these eviction rules are not yet in effect. Other parts of the bill came into effect on the 31st of October, 2024. Emeritus Professor of Sociology at University of Technology Sydney

50 years ago urban activists established key institutions and initiated real and sustained social change. Some of us remnants gather to celebrate Marg Barry’s life and the transformations in participation in planning. Ever since, voracious anti- social forces have been pushing back: the panel will chew over the wins, loses and challenges for inner city residents and the wider society.
