As the festive season begins, our State Insurance New Zealand brand has revealed its 12 Claims of Christmas list for New Zealanders. Mobile phone claims have overtaken cooking-related incidents, coming in as the top claimed contents item. While there were fewer cooking disasters in 2023, technology claims surged, making up 46% of the Christmas contents claims lodged last year. Electronic devices made up nearly half of all claims last Christmas Day, up 15% on the previous year. Smartphone claims alone were up 36% on Christmas Day, compared with any other time of year. State’s Executive General Manager Claims, Wayne Tippet says: “Our data clearly shows what we’ve long suspected - that Christmas is far from a risk-free event, and that’s especially true for the care we take with our tech while trying to manage and multi-task.” To find out more, please visit: https://lnkd.in/gVvCKwCN

We are pleased to be a participant in the UN’s Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) Working Group for Nature and a contributor to the recently launched paper, ‘Insuring a Resilient Nature-Positive Future: Global Guide for Insurers on Setting Priority Actions for Nature’. The paper provides global guidance to the insurance industry on priority actions to contribute to the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework and assists insurers in addressing nature-related issues in underwriting portfolios. As the only Australian based insurer represented on the group, we have been able to provide localised insights and perspective on the consideration of nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities across the insurance value chain. IAG will lead a global research project to create a best practice guide for the safe use and storage of lithium-ion batteries. Together with experts from #QUT Energy Storage Research Group (ESRG), EV FireSafe, Standards Australia, iMOVE Australia, and other global experts, the project aims to debunk myths about battery fires and establish clear safety guidelines for lithium-ion batteries in EVs and devices like e-scooters and e-bikes. IAG's Shawn Ticehurst says as Australia’s EV and lithium-ion battery market accelerates, the development of safety standards and data needed to understand the risks associated with batteries has struggled to keep pace. “The sales of EVs, including plug-in hybrids made up nearly 10% of all new car sales in Australia this year, while e-bikes now represent one-third of all bicycle sales. This project will provide insights on how to safely store, handle and dispose of the increasing number of lithium-ion batteries as they reach the end of their life, and help prevent incidents that pose a risk to life and property safety." https://lnkd.in/eYKqNT_e

NRMA Insurance has launched the latest edition of its Wild Weather Tracker which has revealed that while extreme weather peaks in summer, Australians prioritise leaving a clean home over preparing it for extreme summer weather. The research also highlights that 11% of Australians have returned from holidays to find their homes damaged by thunderstorms, hail, floods, wild winds, or bushfires, emphasising the importance of taking steps to protect your home from potential damage before travelling away this holiday break. As the holiday season approaches, NRMA Insurance has revealed new data showing a 40% increase in home break-ins during summer. Our research found 46% of Australians are planning on travelling for four consecutive days or more over summer, highlighting the increased vulnerability of homes to summer break-ins. We're reminding Australians to take action to protect their homes from intruders during the holiday season. NRMA Insurance Executive General Manager Retail Claims Luke Gallagher said: “Overflowing mailboxes, overgrown lawns, and empty carports are clear signs that a home is vacant. It's worthwhile to ask a neighbour or friend to check on your home, help with upkeep, and collect deliveries.” For more safety tips and information on the most commonly stolen items visit: https://lnkd.in/gUuGvCkk

We have partnered with Code Camp to deliver a series of workshops aimed at inspiring female indigenous school students to consider future STEM careers. Feedback from the first workshop held at Hymba Yumba Independent School in Springfield Queensland has been fantastic, with new passions for coding ignited and a greater awareness generated of potential career pathways. More than 35 participants engaged in the two-day camp held last month, all of whom were given ongoing access to coding platforms to encourage continual skill development. Two participants have also been selected to attend an additional three-day workshop to further support their STEM interest.
