  • We welcome this move by the EU & encourage all countries to be stricter on honey imports. It has generally been accepted that ~35% of honey is "fake" or adulterated. Recent testing of supermarket samples by fed up beekeepers suggests that it could be as high as 70%! 🤯 The result of this fraud is that good people go out of business because they can't compete with bad people who lie and say they are selling the same product. We need to work together to clean up the honey market 🫧🧹

As of today, establishments in third countries exporting honey and other apiculture products intended for human consumption to the EU must be listed. Consignments may only enter the Union if they are dispatched from, obtained, and/or prepared in establishments that appear on lists drawn up and kept up to date in accordance with Article 127(3) of Regulation (EU) 2017/625. This measure will facilitate the traceability of imported consignments and enable the EU Member States to target reinforced checks on establishments suspected of trading adulterated products or found with safety issues. Regulation (EU) 2019/1873 of 7 November 2019, "on the procedures at border control posts for a coordinated performance by competent authorities of intensified official controls," can then also be applied to honey and apiculture products: - Additional controls on each consignment from the same establishment for the same type of infringement can now be imposed at the EU level. - These additional controls will only cease after an uninterrupted sequence of at least 10 satisfactory results and when the total weight of the consignments reaches at least 10 times the weight of the first non-compliant consignment, or a net weight of 300 tons, whichever is lower. - If three consignments reveal the same infringement, reinforced controls will be imposed until an uninterrupted sequence of at least 30 satisfactory results is achieved. - Costs will be at the expense of the operator responsible for the consignments. The updated list of those establishments could be consulted at: https://lnkd.in/eNm_mEuw #Foodfraud #EUFFN #honey #EUfoodsafety

  • This is a fantastic insight into what we are fighting against every day. Did you know Australia imports 7,000 tonnes of low grade "honey" each year at an average price of $2.60/kg? This is dangerous. Consumers need to be aware that they might be consuming rice syrup which has arsenic in it instead of honey. The largest importer of this honey is Hive & Wellness (who owns Capilano, Barnes Naturals, Allowrie, Wescobee brands) and the supermarkets. Because they are also the biggest buyer of Australian honey, the beekeepers don't speak out for fear of reprisals. You can make a difference by purchasing honey from local beekeepers.

  • Raw honey has special properties that are scientifically shown to help with diabetes: Helps Control Blood Sugar: Raw honey contains natural sugar called fructose, which helps keep blood sugar levels steady. Fructose works by making sure that sugar is taken up by the body in a controlled way. Supports Insulin: Insulin is like a key that helps sugar move from the blood into the cells for energy. Raw honey helps the body use insulin better, which can help control blood sugar levels. Natural Antioxidants: Raw honey is full of antioxidants, which help protect the body’s cells. These antioxidants fight off stress in the body that can make diabetes worse. Helps Reduce Fat and Cholesterol: Raw honey can also help reduce harmful fats and cholesterol levels in the blood, which is good for the heart and overall health. Improves Energy Use: Raw honey helps the body use energy better by helping with the breakdown and use of sugar and fat. This is important for keeping blood sugar levels balanced. In simple terms, raw honey helps the body manage sugar levels, supports insulin function, and protects the body’s cells, making it a healthy sweet choice for people who need to watch their sugar levels.

  • Linda W.'s research has shown that beekeepers possess valuable knowledge and insights into ecosystems, which if integrated into land management could benefit both the environment and native wildlife. Concerningly honeybee productivity has declined in Western Australia, requiring 2-3 times more locations for sustainability. Beekeepers value mature, nectar-producing plants (eucalypts, banksias), and biodiverse, moist environments. Linda identified 3 main threats to these environments: 🔺vegetation clearing (e.g. via logging from mining companies) 🔺inappropriate fire regimes (e.g. current prescribed burns practices), and; 🔺climate change. These all negatively impact nectar availability and flowering cycles with affects not only honeybees but also native wildlife like honey possums and black cockatoos. https://lnkd.in/gi9VQWMn

  • Our bodies are made of billions cells. When these cells can get sick and turn into "cancer cells," they grow out of control. Our body has a way to get rid of these bad cells by making them "self-destruct." This process is called apoptosis. Scientists have discovered that raw honey has some special powers that can help push this "self-destruct button" in cancer cells. Raw honey can send signals to the bad cancer cells, telling them to stop growing and start breaking apart. It does this by working on different parts of the cancer cell, like the "power station" (mitochondria) inside the cell, which helps it function. In some types of cancer, raw honey can send signals that turn on proteins (like caspase-3 and caspase-9) that break the cancer cells into tiny pieces. Raw honey also contains good things like flavonoids (a type of nutrient) that block the bad guys from making more cancer cells. It also helps control inflammation (the body’s response to harm) and even boosts the body’s own defense system to fight off cancer. Overall, raw honey helps fight cancer by making the bad cells break apart, stopping them from growing, and helping your body be strong in fighting them. Isn't it time we think differently about which honey we choose? See the science: Ahmed S, Sulaiman SA, Baig AA, Ibrahim M, Liaqat S, Fatima S, Jabeen S, Shamim N, Othman NH.
