  • We are thrilled to announce that Vern Newton, our National Property Manager, has received the prestigious Environment Action Award at the United Nations Association of Australia WA Inc Day Awards last weekend!  This recognition highlights Vern’s exceptional leadership and contribution in environmental restoration within Australia’s building and construction materials sector. Vern’s groundbreaking work in the South-West of Western Australia, one of the world’s 34 biodiversity hotspots, has set a global benchmark for collaborative environmental efforts. He has successfully transformed previously mined sites into thriving ecosystems and worked collaboratively with industry stakeholders to implement these effective strategies.   Well done Vern – we are very proud of you. #sustainability

  • Today is World Mental Health Day, and this year’s theme from Mental Health Australia is all about the importance of meaningful connection – to yourself, your community, your colleagues, and your world.   Here are Hanson, we’re grateful for our people and know the importance of connecting with one another. Collaboration is one of our core values!   We asked our Leadership & Talent Development Manager and in-house psychologist, Charles Brent, his reflections on World Mental Health Day. Here’s what he said: "Being grateful for even the little things in our life triggers positive biological responses in our brains, such as the release of 'feel-good' chemicals like dopamine and serotonin, which lifts our mood, calms our nervous system and enhances our emotional resilience, making it easier to cope with stressors in our life. This simple gratitude practice enhances our sense of wellbeing and leads to a more satisfying and fulfilling life overall.   I think mental well-being at work isn't just about reducing stress—it's about building a culture where people feel valued, supported and empowered. I believe if we can show our colleagues how grateful we are for them, we all thrive.”

Last week we hosted a group of PHD and undergraduate students from Curtin University at our Gaskell Avenue Sand Quarry as part of our research collaboration on effective and sustainable mine closures. Located about 30 mins drive north of Perth, Gaskell Sand Quarry is a world leading quarry providing high grade construction and silica sand to Perth and many countries globally including throughout Asia. The students also visited the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority (Kings Park) laboratories to see key science that underpins the on-ground restoration works at our sand quarry. For more than 30 years we’ve partnered with the Botanic Parks and Garden Authority (Kings Park) and universities to support over 30 Higher Degree Research student programs (including 13 PHDs) studying mine restoration. ‘It is always a pleasure to bring environmental restoration students to Gaskell and give them a chance to witness the real-life complexity of mine-site rehab in a biodiversity hotspot. It's very useful for the student to appreciate, the timescale, the passion, and the commitment needed to achieve world-class rehabilitation striving for full ecological recovery and net-gain. Environmental topics, such as habitat degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change are often gloomy, but interaction with passionate mine site operators and seeing meaningful environmental outcomes on the ground, is always an inspiration and provides a boost of optimism to emerging environmental professionals."  Simone Pedrini, Senior Lecturer, Environmental Restoration, Curtin University   "It was meaningful having truthful discussions with a mining company committed to positive environmental outcomes and understanding the ways rehabilitation is moving towards restoration." Zoe Webber, PhD candidate, ARC Training Centre for Healing Country, Curtin University Thank you to Jennie Hardy, Geoff Forster, Mark Hawkins and the team at Gaskell Sand Quarry for their great support with the university students on the day. We are so proud of our research partnerships and the programs we offer university students including our involvement with Curtin’s Centre for Mine Site Restoration and more recently the Indigenous Healing Country research collaboration.
