A big thank you to Federation University for hosting the GSEM Board meeting at their Berwick Campus. It was fantastic to learn more about Federation University's work at Berwick and contributions across the GSEM region. The Board was especially impressed by the Federation University Co-operative model, which focuses on partnering with regional industry stakeholders to provide students with opportunities to "learn and earn" through practical placements in their chosen fields. GSEM looks forward to strengthening our partnership with Federation University and collaborating on our shared goals. GSEM has submitted a comprehensive proposal to the development of a new Plan for Victoria by the state government, which aims to ensure that we continue to thrive as a dynamic and self-sustaining region. We are advocating for robust policy and action to support the region's ongoing development and prosperity, with our submission outlining several critical areas of focus: - More jobs closer to where people live: Aligning job opportunities with residential growth to ensure that employment is available and accessible to residents. - Better connectivity: Developing transport and infrastructure to better connect communities within the region. - Housing located with services and infrastructure: Ensuring that new housing developments are planned alongside essential services and infrastructure. - Coordinated infrastructure delivery: Establishing a cohesive approach to infrastructure planning and delivery across local, state, and federal levels. Thrilled to share that Chisholm, in collaboration with Jobs Victoria, has successfully completed an employment program that sourced, trained, and placed over 100 priority jobseekers into roles within the manufacturing sector across the South East. The manufacturing industry has long faced skills shortages, but by partnering with industry leaders, Chisholm was able to identify key areas of need. This allowed us to equip priority jobseekers with the necessary skills and connect them with eager employers. The Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations the Hon Tony Burke MP visited the Greater South East Melbourne region today to discuss a range of issues with GSEM representatives. Minister Burke was formally welcomed by the Chair of Panel of Administrators City of Casey, Noelene Duff PSM. The Minister was provided with brief overview of the City of Casey’s arts and cultural program by Georgia Cribb, Head of Visual Arts, Communities Department, City of Casey, as well as a brief tour of the Bunjil Place Gallery’s current exhibition. The exhibition, Kungka Kuṉpu (Strong Women), features major contemporary works by celebrated women artists from the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands (APY), drawn from the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia. The Minister then spoke in depth with GSEM representatives. He was provided with an overview of the work of the GSEM Jobs and Skills Working Group and with the GSEM Jobs and Skills Roadmap, which was launched recently at Parliament House in Canberra. Some of the jobs and skills programs already underway in the region were also showcased. It was successful briefing, the Minister acknowledged the important work done by GSEM across the region, welcomed the regional approach and shared his thoughts for future policy directions. Thank you to the Star News Group for publishing in the Dandenong Journal "Feds Praise GSEM roadmap", quoting skills minister Brendan O'Connor, GSEM Chair Simon McKeon AO as well as City of Greater Dandenong Mayor Cr Lana Formoso. The launch in Parliament House, Canberra was huge success, with the minister saying the GSEM region is "key" to the Government's "A Future Made in Australia" and is "critical" to Australia's manufacturing sector. More than 50 people attended the launch and there was a heavy schedule of meetings with local leaders, from industry, education and local government (including mayors and CEOs) meeting with ministers, shadow ministers and advisers to ensure Greater South East Melbourne's message was heard across government, the opposition and parliament itself. #GSEM #Jobs #Skills

A big thank you to Brendan O'Connor the Federal Minister for Skills who launched the GSEM Jobs and Skills Roadmap in Parliament House, Canberra, tonight. The launch followed a full day of advocacy meetings between mayors and other leaders from across the GSEM region with government and opposition MPs. It is vital to businesses, employers, workers and residents that the region gets the support it needs to create the jobs of the future and ensure workers have the skills they need to live work and succeed in Greater South East Melbourne, which has more jobs than Western Sydney or Adelaide. We are indebted to Julian Hill MP and Zoe McKenzie MP for hosting the launch, and to all those who attended, including Jodie Belyea MP who also gave of her time to address the GSEM Jobs and Skills Summit last month.. An especial thank you to the region’s mayors for giving up their time to work tirelessly for benefit of the whole of Greater South East Melbourne. The mayors are Cr Lana Formoso who leads the City of Greater Dandenong; Cr Jack Kowarzik at Cardinia Shire Council; Cr Jude Dwight at Knox City Council; Cr Jenna Davey-Burns the mayor of Kingston City Council; Cr Simon-Brooks Mayor of Mornington Peninsula Shire; Cr Nathan Conroy Mayor of Frankston City Council and Cr Nicky Luo Mayor of the City Of Monash. Thanks also to all our dedicated GSEM board members and independent board members, including Margaret Fitzherbert, James Merlino and GSEM Chair Simon McKeon. It was a hugely successful day of meetings, with ministers and MPs wonderfully receptive to the needs of the region. We thank them all. A delegation of leaders from across the Greater South East Melbourne region is travelling to Canbarra today to advocate to ministers, shadow ministers, MPs and bureaucrats on behalf of the region. We will impress upon our representatives the sheer size of the GSEM region in terms of output ($85 billion), number of jobs (500,000), number of businesses (85,000), the diversity of the region (100+ nationalities represented) and the need for a jobs and skills plan. But we are not going empty handed. GSEM has asked Skills Minister Brendan O'Connor to launch the GSEM Jobs and Skills Roadmap, a clear cooperative path forward to providing the skills and jobs the fastest-growing region in Australia's fastest growing city needs. Thank you to all those who are giving up their time to be part of the delegation today. It will be hard work, but rewarding for those who live, work and want to succeed in the GSEM region.
