Helping business and local government manage diverse fleets with news/information on heavy vehicles, plant and equipment
About us
When an organisation operates a diverse fleet of heavy vehicles, plant and equipment, the Fleet Manager is always researching for the latest news and trends during the early stages of procurement because the assets under management come in every shape and size. The assets in these fleets fall in between passenger cars and large articulated trucks that move freight. They are small to medium rigid trucks, small plant and heavy machinery. Each one has a different maintenance plan, replacement schedule and safety procedure. Fleet News Group supports Fleet Managers that manage these diverse and complex fleets via Fleet HV News.

Federal, state and territory transport ministers must reduce unfair heavy vehicle fines, which don’t improve safety outcomes or admit that six years of reviewing the Heavy Vehicle National Law have been a failure. NatRoad Australia released its submission on the draft new Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) and the review of HVNL penalties in late November. “After six years of talking, the proposed changes to the HVNL are incremental at best,” said Warren Clark, NatRoad CEO. The Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia (HVIA) hosted its National Awards Gala Dinner on December 5, and it was the biggest yet with 270 attendees turning up to celebrate the industry’s success across the past 12 months. This year’s event was again held at the home of the Brisbane Truck Show, the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, attracting a cross-section of industry figures, from key decision makers to an impressive number of up-and-coming young apprentices and future leaders. HVIA Chief Executive Officer Todd Hacking says the event was a fitting celebration of the heavy vehicle industry’s leading innovators and innovations in 2024. “Every year we’re honoured to witness more of our members’ extraordinary innovation and ingenuity being revealed,” he said. Geotab and Logmaster Australia have entered into a commercial agreement, which will combine Geotab’s telematics with Logmaster’s Electronic Work Diary (EWD) and fatigue compliance automation solutions. The agreement allows Geotab to offer Logmaster subscriptions in a more seamless manner, making EWDs more accessible and empowering heavy vehicle businesses with the tools they need to stay competitive and compliant. Many trucking businesses manually reconcile driver logbook records, telematics data, and schedules to ensure compliance – a time-intensive process that leaves room for human error, potentially compromising driver safety and fleet productivity. Under this new agreement, users of Geotab’s services in Australia can now purchase subscriptions to Logmaster’s solutions that improve driver safety, efficiency and compliance. The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) announced a $10 million grant to Fortescue to develop, build, and demonstrate first of a kind fast chargers for heavy mine site vehicles. Fortescue’s $35.3 million ‘Fast Charger for Heavy Battery Electric Vehicles’ project will develop 6 MW fast chargers, capable of charging 240 tonne battery electric trucks in under 30 minutes. ARENA CEO Darren Miller said the project would help reduce emissions in one of Australia’s most carbon intensive industries. “ARENA is working to reduce emissions from Australia’s heavy industry, with heavy haulage high on the priority list for the mining sector.” “Heavy haulage for remote mine sites contributes around a quarter of the mining industry’s emission and is considered a hard to abate sector, so we’re investing in the technologies that will be part of the solution,” Mr Miller said. EXM has been providing infrastructure solutions to the agricultural sector all over the Darling Downs and Central Highlands of Queensland & Northern NSW since 2015. A few years ago, they finally got fed up with the difficulties around concrete supply. A turning point was Managing Director Evan English visiting the World of Concrete Expo in Las Vegas to investigate mobile batching plants, and from here, EXM decided it was better to travel the concrete from existing fixed plants. “As most of the area we service is grain production country, we have built a lot of bases for grain silos, and a typical silo needs about fifteen cubic meters of concrete delivered in a timely fashion,” Evan said. The growth of overall heavy vehicle registrations has brought a focus on maintenance, with the average age of trucks on Australian roads now sitting around 13 years. Statistics from the Australian Government’s Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) show that light trucks have an average life of 9.85 years, while heavy rigid trucks have an average life of 16.30 years. According to Isuzu Australia Limited’s (IAL) Head of Aftersales Brett Stewart, despite the age of the truck parc, businesses are growing more aware of the benefits associated with using genuine Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) parts and components for vehicle maintenance.
