"In 2001, at the age of 16 I relocated to Australia from South Africa. I spent my first few years adapting to a new way of life, making friends, and finishing high school, before jetting off on a gap year (only to stay away for 3 years instead). On returning to Australia, I stumbled around for a little while trying to figure out what I wanted to do before securing a role at CommBank. I have worked here for almost 15 years and what I enjoy most about my job are the people I work with every day. The friendships I have made with so many from all walks of life has enriched my life. I am proud to be a steering committee member of AdvantAge, one of CommBank’s six employee-led networks, whose purpose is to create an age-inclusive workforce that represents the communities we serve. Embracing age diversity fosters an environment where innovation flourishes, respect is paramount, and everyone feels valued. Together, we are committed to creating a space where all voices are heard, and everyone has the opportunity to contribute and grow. To me, diversity and inclusion means assuming less about people and treating others the way you would like to be treated. It means my nephews growing up in a world that sees everyone as equal. I would like to see everyone be a little bolder in their conversations about diversity and inclusion. Until we speak openly about the challenges and inconsistencies, we cannot fix them. When I’m not working, I enjoy reading and spending time with family and friends. I like to dedicate my time equally between myself and those I love." "I studied Biomedical Engineering and never imagined I’d end up in banking. Yet, here I am, 16 years later still extremely passionate about the industry. Throughout my career, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have supportive leaders who have championed my growth. I can recall moments when an opportunity would arise and the self-doubt would creep in, “I’d love to do that role, but…”, “the timing doesn’t seem right” or “I can’t do that.” But each time, a leader would be there to give me the confidence to push past those doubts, which was key to building my self-belief. One leader challenged my “I can’t” with “Why can’t you?” This has really stuck with me. My recent move into sustainability was no different; without the typical sustainability background, the encouragement from my leaders was pivotal in helping me overcome that challenge. Looking back, I realise how these moments have shaped me to be the leader I am today and how important it is to have the support from those around you but also to give that same support to other aspiring female leaders in the industry. That’s why I am so passionate about our sponsorship of Women in Banking and Finance. The sponsorship alongside their mentoring program is a great way for women in the industry to connect, learn and grow. The program creates a multiplier effect where women are supported through their leadership journeys and, in turn, will hopefully pay it forward one day." “It’s fair to say that banking wasn’t my aspiration when I was at school. However, two decades ago I had the opportunity to lead a flagship branch in Brisbane CBD, it was here I developed a keen interest in the banking sector. Leading teams enabling customers to achieve their financial goals has and remains today what keeps me motivated to continuously look for better ways to support the banks clients. Having served the agribusiness sector for over 10 years, I’ve worked with customers who have faced into very challenging times such as droughts and floods to name a few. Agri enterprises are hugely impacted by these factors and it’s extremely important for the bank to respond to customers in times of need, to add value and to be a reliable support system for them. I get great satisfaction seeing the families we work with in the Agri sector throughout North QLD grow wealth while contributing to domestic and global food bowls as the result of strong relationships held with a local banker. Success for me is not just about being able to support our clients with the capital they need to run and grow their business but also show value in what we do by working collaboratively with the client’s suite of professionals. When our clients think of the team as a trusted advisor that’s when I know we’ve done our job.” Today, we are celebrating National Ag Day – ‘Grow you Good Thing’ honouring the dedication and grit of those in Agriculture, which reminds us of the vital role the Australian agriculture industry plays in our lives. Relocating for my General Manager role was a big change but luckily, I had my mentor to help guide me through it. While I have worked for CommBank for 9 years, last year, I made the decision to relocate from Queensland to Victoria to step into a new leadership role. While excited about the opportunity and the change, the transition was filled with natural uncertainties of a new role and a fresh start in a new city. My manager recommended the Women in Banking and Finance Mentorship Program. I was paired with a leader for guidance, participated in workshops and networking events and had the opportunity to build the skills that helped with my career growth and success. It was exactly what I needed - a way to connect with other women leaders and gain the support and guidance from a mentor to thrive in my new role. My goal was to maximise my experience and I did that by investing my time in preparation and homework that turned discussions into action. I also gave myself space to be vulnerable which meant being open about my ambitions, fears and challenges. Ultimately, you get out what you put in, so I made sure that I had clear goals for every session, ready to discuss the challenges at hand at any given time. This mentorship has not only broadened my horizons but has also given me the confidence and tools to excel in my leadership role. Belinda Harris x CommBank General Manager Commercial Banking VIC

“There’s been a real through-line of technology throughout my career which has made every day so exciting for me. Especially on days like today where I get to spend my day roaming around SXSW Sydney, learning about the latest trends in tech and marketing. I can’t wait to get back and share my learnings with my peers. I originally got my start as a recruiter for technology roles in the Talent Acquisition team at CommBank. Then I moved into the Employer Brand team, again focusing on tech. Six years on and I’ve recently moved into a new role as a Product Owner in the Technology and Business team, which is all about building our overall technology brand. A regular day for me changes constantly. I really love how diverse all my roles have been. There are so many opportunities in the tech space at CommBank. You can start somewhere and find yourself somewhere completely different.” Katie Cruickshanks Product Owner – Engineering Practice Tech See how we’re unlocking tomorrow at SXSW Sydney 2024 by searching ‘SXSW Sydney’ on our website.
