🛑 Human nature won’t change. 🛑 Economic growth isn’t always the win we think it is. Johnny Kahlbetzer, CEO of Twynam, doesn't mince words. He joins Anton on The Climatalist this week—our final episode for 2024! Unpacking the tension between consumption, growth, and sustainability, Johnny highlights how we’re wired to want more—even when “more” comes at a cost to the planet. So what’s his solution? Make sustainability cheaper. Johnny explains why businesses need to focus on reducing carbon intensity and costs. If eco-friendly options aren’t hip-pocket friendly, most people simply won’t choose them. 📢 Watch the full episode on Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. What do you think—can we scale sustainability without scaling consumption?

Why are we talking about #methane on the podcast this week? Our guest, Louis Stenmark from Windfall Bio, explains that methane is over 80 times more potent than CO₂ in terms of heating potential, making it a powerful lever for near-term climate action. 🌍 If you haven't caught the full conversation, find The Climatalist on Spotify or YouTube to hear how innovative thinking is turning this climate challenge into a business opportunity. #methanereduction #climateaction #sustainability #podcast

Methane is a potent climate threat – but what if it could actually be useful? Our guest on The Climatalist this week, Louis Stenmark, Co-Founder of Windfall Bio, is on a mission to make methane part of the solution. 🌾 In this episode, Louis explains how his team is capturing methane emissions from sources like farms and landfill and transforming them into organic fertiliser. This offers a triple benefit for the planet: ✅ reducing methane emissions, ✅ producing sustainable fertiliser for agriculture, and, ✅ cutting reliance on synthetic carbon-intensive fertilisers. Louis' path from elite track and field athlete to Forbes 30 Under 30 (Food & Drink 2024) is just as interesting as the climate tech his team is building! I wonder. Who is ready? The wildest, maddest transition since the steam engine. The car engine. The train. The Industrial Revolution. Every sector of the economy that makes, grows or moves things will be fundamentally altered. It’s not coming - it’s already under way. Can you not see it? It’s beginning. Every sector of the economy is shifting. Uneven, patchy, furtive - sometimes resembling Shakespeare’s “whining schoolboy, with his satchel and shining morning face, creeping like a snail unwillingly to school.” But in the end - it’s happening. Are you ready? Will you wait to be ready? It’s a rapid, exponential shift - they happen at first very slowly, then very suddenly. The bottom of the hockey stick. The place where midnight thoughts of “I had a mate who bought bitcoin for a dollar” live. Will you seize the opportunity - starting now, starting today? Will you be tomorrow’s hero or yesterday’s has been? Or worse - the almost, maybe, could have been - the one who saw it but never quite got the guts to make the big, audicacious move. What role will you play in this future that’s coming? Our children’s future. I wonder. https://transition.breakthrough

Are we about to see a rush of climate investment driven by FOMO? 🏃♂️ 💨 If you haven't caught this week's episode of The Climatalist, John Mellowes (Co-Founder BIOCARBON_AU) shares why he’s optimistic we’ll crack the climate code within the next decade. As big successes emerge from first-mover funds, he believes the fear of missing out will drive more investors to follow. We agree. Our climate is at breaking point—and so are Anton's analogies. Have you watched our recent episode to learn more about biochar, green steel, and decarbonising heavy industry yet? Find The Climatalist wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks again to John Mellowes and BIOCARBON_AU.
The sun is out and🔥 BBQ season is here! Aussies are back on the charcoal—bringing the smoky flavour and maybe a little guilt trip from that "friend" about burning dead dinosaurs. But imagine their face when you tell them your grill is running on carbon-neutral fuel, not adding a single extra puff of CO2 - and you still get the smoky flavour.... Guilt-free grilling with a planet-friendly twist! Sadly I can’t sell you that today… Business idea!? Back to our core message - NOW - imagine your BBQ was the steel industry?! Stick with me while I stretch this analogy to breaking point: Every tonne of recycled steel made with electric arc furnaces also uses 700 kg of high grade coking coal. What if we could make steel making carbon neutral like our imaginary guilt-free charcoal bbq. See where I'm going with this? This week on The Climatalist, I chat with John Mellowes, Co-Founder of BIOCARBON_AU, who’s swapping coal for biochar—a plant-based, carbon-neutral alternative. It’s a breakthrough for steel production and the environment: same strong steel, dramatically fewer emissions. And here’s the kicker—it’s a massive $20–40 billion market opportunity! Decarbonising steel production (and other heavy industry) is the next big shift. So next time you’re firing up the grill, remember that real change is cooking in heavy industry too. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️. Tune into The Climatalist on your favourite podcast app and see how impactful—and profitable—green business can be. #greensteel #sustainability #podcast #climatalist

Did you know making one tonne of steel takes 700kg of coal? With the steel industry responsible for 7-9% of global CO2 emissions, innovation in this sector is critical. In the latest episode of The Climatalist, Anton sits down with John Mellowes, Co-Founder of BIOCARBON_AU, to discuss how he and his team are tackling decarbonisation in the steel industry (and doing a bunch of amazing things with byproducts, too!) 🌎🔄 Tune in to learn about the solution and market opportunity.
