Early experiences of rejection, like bullying or social exclusion, often leave a lasting impact, particularly for neurodivergent individuals. 💙 These formative experiences can lay the foundation for Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD), making social interactions in adulthood feel more intense and emotionally challenging. 🔹 Long-Term Effects: Research highlights that experiences of early rejection can contribute to heightened sensitivity to perceived criticism, sometimes making feedback feel overwhelming (Zimmer-Gembeck et al., 2016). 🔹 Hypervigilance: Many with RSD enter social settings on high alert, scanning for potential rejection to protect themselves. This state of hypervigilance can be exhausting, reinforcing feelings of anxiety (Lin et al., 2022). 🔹 Building Resilience: Early interventions and supportive, validating environments can help individuals develop coping skills, self-compassion, and resilience—essential tools for managing RSD. Creating awareness of RSD allows us to build more compassionate spaces for neurodivergent individuals, supporting their journey to healing and emotional well-being. 🌱💪 Listen to Divergent Dialogues podcast now to learn more about the latest Autism & ADHD research - link in bio. Trauma therapy can be a transformative approach for those living with Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD). Unlike cognitive-based therapies that focus on coping, trauma therapy directly addresses the root causes—those early experiences of rejection, bullying, or exclusion that can shape how we respond to perceived rejection today. By healing the deep-seated emotional impacts tied to rejection, trauma therapy can reduce the intensity of RSD, creating space for self-compassion and reducing self-blame. If RSD is part of your journey, know that healing is possible. Trauma therapy offers a path to feeling more resilient and less emotionally vulnerable in daily life. 🌱 Navigating a neurotypical world as a neurodivergent person can be challenging. Understanding Behavioural Responses to Rejection Sensitivity in Adolescents 🌱 As Neurodivergent Social Workers, many of us may recognise and empathise with the intense emotions tied to rejection sensitivity—whether from personal experience or from our work with clients. Research by Zimmer-Gembeck et al. (2016) highlights two main responses to rejection sensitivity in adolescents: withdrawal and aggression, each driven by a unique reaction to perceived rejection. 🔹 Anxious Rejection Sensitivity: Adolescents with this type tend to avoid social interactions as a self-protective measure, fearing potential rejection or criticism. Over time, this avoidance can lead to isolation, reinforcing feelings of loneliness and low self-esteem. Without support, these patterns may prevent teens from experiencing the positive social connections essential for building self-worth. 🔹 Angry Rejection Sensitivity: Adolescents with this response may react defensively, with anger or confrontation. This aggressive stance can be a way to defend against perceived threats to self-worth, but it often leads to strained relationships and social conflicts, creating a cycle of alienation and reinforcing fears of rejection. As practitioners, recognising these different responses allows us to tailor our support. By promoting adaptive skills that address each coping style, we empower young people to handle rejection with resilience, reducing patterns of avoidance or conflict.
