  • A 500-year-old resume... Recently in Melbourne, I took the time to explore the "Leonardo Da Vinci – 500 Years of Genius" exhibition at The Lume, Melbourne, which is on till March 31st, 2025. Reflecting on Da Vinci's incredible legacy made me appreciate his renowned artistic skills and his innovative spirit. Without formal education, Leonardo still managed to craft works that continue to awe us more than five centuries later. It wasn't just his art, either; his detailed journals showcase a relentless curiosity and a methodical approach to solving problems and recording ideas. His practice of recording thoughts and musings strikes me as a lost art in our modern age, where fleeting thoughts are often left unexplored. One of the most captivating artifacts was his resume, penned in 1482 as he sought a position at the court of the future Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza. It was fascinating to see that he emphasized his plans for military machines and combat inventions over his artistic skills, leaving a small footnote that he could also paint and sculpt. Interestingly, despite these ambitious plans, his most famous commission for the Duke turned out to be "The Last Supper," one of the supreme masterpieces of art. It’s a reminder that sometimes, our careers can take unexpected turns, and what we initially consider our secondary skills might actually become our defining contributions. Curious to know, has anyone else experienced a twist in their career where your 'secondary' skill became your main path? Would love to hear your stories! #loveyourwork #secondaryskill #resume

  • If you’re considering a role change, here are a few practical tips from our Managing Director, Ian Hamilton, to help understand if the perceived Nirvana being promoted is the real thing.

🌟 Finding Your Happy Place at Work 🌟 Having recently travelled interstate on Qantas, their safety message opens by talking about “taking you to your happy place. A place that makes your heart sing." That resonated with me around recruitment and our work environments. When people switch roles, it should be to a place they genuinely prefer, where they feel stimulated and invigorated to face new challenges and stretch their capabilities. 🏢 A fulfilling role is where you feel you are contributing to something larger and where your efforts are truly valued. Where you feel your values align with the organisation's culture. Sadly, it's not always rainbows and sunshine when changing roles. Sometimes, what seemed like Nirvana during the interview process turns out to be far from it. You might end up feeling undervalued or mistrusted—far from the ideal scenario promised. 🔍 If you’re considering a role change, here are a few practical tips to help understand if the perceived Nirvana being promoted is the real thing: 𝐃𝐨 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠: Websites like Glassdoor can offer insights but take it with a grain of salt. Personal connections are usually more reliable. If you know someone at the company or someone who knows someone, don’t hesitate to reach out and ask about their experiences. 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: When visiting, notice the interactions between leaders and team members. Do leaders know employees by name? Do they share information openly? Leadership style can say a lot about a company’s culture. 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐲: What are the expectations? What kind of support and resources will be provided? Has the role evolved recently? All these factors matter. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞'𝐬 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: Asking why the last person left and how long they were in the position can give you valuable context. If possible, try to get in touch with them to hear their side of the story. 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: Find out the company’s attitude towards personal and professional growth. This can be a dealbreaker if you’re looking for long-term career development. The more you know beforehand, the better equipped you are to make a decision that will indeed make your heart sing. Don’t just seek for a change, but a change that can become your happy place! 🔄📈 Carroll Consulting Group #happyplace                #loveyourwork                  #jobchange            #culturefit
