We’re proud to share that our Canadian subsidiary, Apollo Green, is spearheading an international research collaboration with Université Laval. This pioneering project aims to tackle key challenges in cannabis cultivation, aiming to improve outcomes for growers and patients alike. The research focuses on developing pest-resistant plants, climate-adaptable strains, and precision-bred medicinal cannabis. By investing in research and innovation, we’re working to improve the quality, reliability, and accessibility of medicinal cannabis for Australian patients.
We’re excited to announce our collaboration with Université Laval on a groundbreaking research project, backed by Canada’s Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). This research will focus on: - Developing stronger, pest-resistant plants for growers. - Creating climate-adaptable strains for diverse environments. - Breeding precision medicinal cannabis tailored to patient needs. Using multi-omics technologies and AI, we aim to address cultivation challenges, improve farming sustainability, and deliver consistent, high-quality cannabis. A Lesson for Australia's Future Cannabis Market As Australia’s medicinal cannabis market continues to grow, we can look to other jurisdictions like New York for insights into what the future may hold. While medicinal cannabis is rightfully the focus for now, adult-use cannabis may eventually enter the conversation here. New York’s recent crackdown on unlicensed cannabis shops—seizing $63 million worth of unregulated products—shows us the importance of a well-structured regulatory framework. Opening the market too quickly, without robust regulations, can lead to unintended consequences, as seen in New York, where cannabis was being sold through unregulated outlets. Their recent reforms demonstrate the need for oversight that protects consumers and supports legal businesses. Australia has the opportunity to learn from these examples to ensure a responsible and safe rollout in the future, should adult-use cannabis become a reality. Two triploid cannabis strains have arrived at Green Farmers: OG Triploid and Donutz Triploid. Thanks to the collaborative efforts with Biortica Agrimed and Apollo Green for importing, and Humboldt Seed Company for breeding. What Are Triploid Genetics? Triploid cannabis plants possess three sets of chromosomes, unlike the standard diploid varieties that have two. This genetic distinction is akin to the difference between a regular banana and its seedless supermarket counterpart. Triploid plants are naturally engineered to enhance certain desirable traits without the natural limitations of standard diploid cannabis. Potential Benefits of Triploid Cannabis: Enhanced Robustness: With an extra set of chromosomes, triploids are typically more vigorous and robust than their diploid counterparts. Increased Yield: These plants can potentially produce more biomass due to their genetic richness. Diverse Phenotypes: The additional chromosome set opens up possibilities for new cannabinoid and terpene profiles, providing unique effects and flavours. Reduced Seed Production: Ideal for cultivators, as fewer seeds mean less contamination of sinsemilla (seedless) cannabis crops. Disease Resistance: Enhanced genetic makeup can lead to greater resilience against pests and diseases. As we integrate these triploid strains into our glasshouse, we look forward to exploring their full potential and sharing these exctitng new cultivars with our B2B customers. As the cannabis industry continues to evolve, the preservation of legacy genetics becomes increasingly vital. At Biortica Agrimed, through our wholly-owned subsidiary Apollo Green, we are fortunate to benefit from Canada's forward-thinking amnesty policy on legacy genetics. This policy has enabled us to share these precious genetic resources on a global scale. In a parallel effort, California is actively working to protect its renowned cannabis heritage. The state has launched a funded initiative to analyse and safeguard the genetic information of strains from iconic cultivation regions such as the Emerald Triangle.
