The Big Issue is a social enterprise providing opportunities to people experiencing homelessness and marginalisation.

About us

The Big Issue is a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to supporting and creating job opportunities for people experiencing homelessness, disadvantage and marginalisation. What we do We run social enterprises to create work opportunities for people who are unable to access mainstream jobs. These enterprises operate much like traditional businesses, except all revenue is put back into the enterprises for the benefit of the individuals involved and broader community. Our social enterprises include The Big Issue magazine, the Women's Subscription Enterprise and The Big Issue Classroom. We also run the Community Street Soccer Program. Our social enterprises not only provide opportunities for people to earn an income, but importantly, to build confidence and their capacity to help themselves. The people we help come from a range of backgrounds including mental illness, homelessness, long-term unemployment, intellectual and physical disability and drug and alcohol dependency.

  • Thank you to the Hon. Sue M Ellery MLC and Western Australian Government for their incredible commitment of $1.5 million for The Big Issue to establish a National Customer Support Centre in WA. Run through our Women’s Workforce program, the National Customer Support Centre will create employment for up to 100 women experiencing marginalisation and disadvantage over the next five years, giving them the opportunity to earn a meaningful income and positively change their lives. For nearly 15 years, The Big Issue Women’s Workforce program has provided low-barrier work opportunities for women who are experiencing homelessness and disadvantage. We’re excited and motivated to continue providing these opportunities for more women on the margins.

  • "Christmas is about family and friends, past and present. People see their loved ones and pay their respects. I think about the past vendors, and they are all in my hearts, because we’re one big family. This Christmas, I’ll be going to Melbourne to see my godparents. Last time I saw them it was 1990 – I haven’t seen them since! Merry Christmas everyone." Beautiful words Dom ❤️ Dom sells outside The Cutting Board, Brisbane CBD.

  • "If you haven’t seen me around as much this year, it’s because I had liver cancer and related health issues. It was quite an experience being in hospital, and I struggled to get back on my feet. Slowly but surely I’m getting back into it. My great hope is that my further therapies turn out well, and that we all get stronger and carry on. Thank you to everyone who has given me support over the years – and there are hundreds of thousands of you out there. Everybody should keep up their good spirits, whatever’s happened lately: the sun is shining, the sky is blue and we’ll all come through!" Louis sells The Big Issue at Southern Cross Station, Melbourne.

  • "2024 got off to a good start. I went fishing in Dromana. I also bought some great headphones: they’re noise-cancelling and all. They’re perfect because I love listening to music. I’m trying to get to Dromana again this year with a mate. Can’t wait for Christmas dinner with the family either. I’d like to say thank you to all my customers for buying the mag and supporting me. This year I’ve really put in the hours, saving some money – and I’m proud of how hard I worked. I’m loving seeing the Myer Christmas windows at my pitch. It’s a special time of year. Merry Christmas to all!" James sells The Big Issue outside Myer Bourke St.
