Babcock Australasia is actively enhancing sovereign capability in Western Australia’s defence industry by connecting supply chain partners with valuable training opportunities. Last week’s discussions with supply chain partners Griffin Marine Services, Orontide Group Limited, Ausbright Electrical Solutions and Allship Engineering and education provider South Metropolitan TAFE highlighted crucial paths to upskill in cybersecurity and engineering tech as part of the Defence Industry Existing Worker Incentive (DIEWI). Servicing the Royal Australian Navy, Babcock is committed to supporting the growth of defence industry capability. Under our regional Maintenance Provider West contract, Babcock’s supply chain boasts more than 50 sub-contractors. We were delighted to host Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, Richard Marles MP at Babcock International Group’s Devonport Royal Dockyard and HMNB Devonport. Babcock is a world-leader in submarine capability and this visit enabled guests to see first-hand how our capabilities and know-how are able to support the #AUKUS alliance. Babcock currently sustains 100 per cent of the UK’s Royal Navy submarine fleet and owns and operates the UK’s only licensed facility for refitting, refuelling and defueling nuclear submarines. Our Devonport facility is the only UK site capable of undertaking deep submarine maintenance and provides through-life support and life extension programmes to the entirety of the UK’s submarine fleet.
Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, Richard Marles MP and Luke Pollard MP, UK Minister for Armed Forces and our Devonport constituency MP, discussed the potential for further AUKUS collaboration between the two nations during a tour of our Devonport Royal Dockyard and HMNB Devonport yesterday. The visit enabled guests to see first-hand how our capabilities and know-how are able to support the AUKUS alliance and to experience the size and scale of projects across the site. Our Devonport facility is the only UK site capable of undertaking deep submarine maintenance and provides through-life support and life extension programmes to the entirety of the UK’s submarine fleet. Our commitment to further enhance the dockyard’s capabilities to deliver major defence projects into the future has been recently highlighted as part of Growth Alliance Plymouth.

Under the guidance of Patrick Curran and our own Sigrid Wilson, over 300 Babcock staff from all areas and experience levels have taken a deep dive into product safety, risk management and our related legal obligations via a simulated court experience. Dubbed “Sim Court” and taking place in a real courtroom, this immersive full-day experience starts with legal experts like Patrick Walsh and Jacob Parry providing vital theory behind work health and safety, before participants are placed into various roles in a simulated court experience—three as defendants and one as judge. At Sim Court, a case based on a real near miss situation is presented, with the three defendants rationalising their decisions that led to the unsafe product. This experience encourages our teams to deeply understand their decision-making processes while reinforcing a strong safety mindset and paving the way for good decision-making under pressure.

Last week, Babcock attended the annual Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in Orlando, Florida. During the week, Babcock was able to meet with various Australasian organisations operating with various training capabilities. These delegates were taken into the new Babcock Immersive Training Experience (BITE) demonstrator where they experienced our technology firsthand, followed by an overview of the analytics from the control room. BITE is an immersive training environment that replicates the physical, sensory, and cognitive challenges of operating in an urban environment. It produces specifically layered and operationally accurate soundscapes, seismic simulation, visual stimuli, generated aromas, and environmental control that enables real-time adaptable operationally accurate scenarios. Babcock has delivered an additional Bell 412 helicopter to SA Ambulance Service (SAAS), providing South Australians with greater access to life saving emergency care. With three Bell 412s now in its fleet, SAAS can fly at least two air ambulances simultaneously, ensuring rapid response when it matters most. To compliment the aircraft’s delivery, Babcock has recruited additional pilots and engineers and is also investing in upgrades to its hangar at Adelaide Airport, extending the base’s workshop and storage space, adding a new SAPOL office and training room, and an additional airside helicopter parking area to assist response times. While our dedicated team supports Ambulance Victoria in their life-saving missions, it's essential to pause and appreciate the journey. This stunning shot of a Babcock Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) chopper was captured by Shepparton resident Taylor moments after it landed at the local airport. Whilst they waited for a patient transfer, the aircrew and paramedics jumped out and shared some of their incredible stories with Taylor and his young family. Conversations like this strengthen our bonds with the communities we serve and emphasise the vital role that air ambulance services play in connecting rural patients with metropolitan health services.

Babcock has joined forces with PteroDynamics Inc. to explore unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for enhanced autonomous capabilities across defence and civil contracts in Australia and New Zealand. PteroDynamics' innovative Transwing is revolutionary combining fixed-wing speed with exceptional vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) flexibility. These unique capabilities make it ideal for automating time-sensitive delivery of critical high-value payloads to hard-to-reach locations with no runways and in austere conditions, including maritime logistics support and reconnaissance, disaster relief and surveillance. Babcock and PteroDynamics will now collaborate on a series of initiatives to introduce PteroDynamics’ next-generation UAS to the Australasian market.
