The head of an organised crime syndicate and 5 of his associates have been jailed for an elaborate $10 million tax fraud and money laundering operation. The 6 individuals have received sentences of up to 9 years and 3 months imprisonment for their part in this crime. These outcomes are a result of Operation Bordelon, a joint investigation between us, ASIC, Australian Federal Police, Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions as part of the ATO-led Serious Financial Crime Taskforce (SFCT).

The ATO-led Serious Financial Crime Taskforce (SFCT) is warning businesses against using commercial structuring arrangements or schemes to exploit the GST rules and create fraudulent transactions. The SFCT has issued an intelligence bulletin detailing what these illegal arrangements look like. "Those who seek to defraud the tax and super systems will be caught and face the full force of the law," - Deputy Commissioner and SFCT Chief John Ford.

Operation Protego: A Victorian woman has been sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in jail for fraudulently obtaining and disposing of over $296,000 in GST refunds. ‘Funds were taken away that could have been used to support community services such as healthcare, infrastructure and education. Instead, they were used for purchasing personal luxuries’ Serious Financial Crime Taskforce Chief John Ford said.

We’re cracking down on labour hire providers suspected of underpaying and exploiting farm workers. This week we teamed up with The Fair Work Ombudsman and Australian Department of Home Affairs to investigate suspected worker exploitation in the agriculture industry. This was part of Operation Topaz in southeast Queensland.
