When should you use an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) 🚨 on a boat? Co-skipper of @officialrolexsydneyhobartrace contestant Disko Trooper Contender Sails ⛵, Jules Hall, explains when an EPIRB should be used and how they work. It is compulsory for all boats heading offshore to stow an EPIRB. Keep it in a readily accessible position and make sure everyone on board knows where it is and how it works. Always remember to keep your EPIRB registration up-to-date with AMSA. Lifejackets have come a long way in recent years, as co-skipper of @officialrolexsydneyhobartrace contestant @Disko Trooper Contender Sails ⛵, Jules Hall, explains. Modern lifejackets , also known as personal flotation devices (PFDs), are designed to be worn at all times by everyone on board a boat. There are slimline options available which are comfortable and easy to use in an emergency. Do as the pros do and get on board with lifejacket safety ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gg3c7K5b #AMSA #SafeSeas #SearchAndRescue

At 5:11 pm AEDT yesterday, 8 metre ocean rowing vessel SMILES, with one person on board, experienced difficulty in heavy seas. The vessel was in the Coral Sea, approximately 520km north-east of Cairns, Queensland. We tasked our Cairns-based Challenger rescue aircraft at 5:38 pm to establish communications with the vessel and develop a rescue plan. We also diverted Netherlands flagged general purpose cargo vessel O.T. IDEAAL to the scene, which was enroute from Brisbane to Port Moresby. O.T. IDEAAL proceeded overnight, taking the distressed rower safely on board early this morning. We would like to thank the Master and crew of the O.T. IDEAAL for their invaluable assistance. This rescue highlights the importance of carrying a distress beacon to ensure safety at sea: https://brnw.ch/21wPvML #AMSA #SafeSeas #SearchAndRescue

Safety on the water starts with the right lifejacket. Knowing which lifejacket is right for your operation could make all the difference. Each type of lifejacket serves a different need, from the slim and unrestricted fit of an inflatable lifejacket, to the reliable buoyancy of foam models. Cape Cleveland Lighthouse is 145 years today - we hope it is celebrated with some cool sea turtle and dugong sightings! 🐢 Since 1879 the lighthouse beauty has marked the entrance to Cleveland Bay and the Port of Townsville. It was even used as an observation post in the Second World War. Originally fitted with an oil wick burner, the light has been solar powered since 1987. The timber framed galvanised iron heritage tower stands 11 meters high and is one of fourteen of this style across Queensland. Standing tall on the coast of Bowling Green Bay National Park, you can only visit this Queensland icon by boat or helicopter! 🚁🚤 But you can take a virtual tour on our website now 👉 https://brnw.ch/21wPnz5 Learn more about our role in managing lighthouses around Australia 👉 https://brnw.ch/21wPnz6 Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation #LighthouseLove #SafeSeas #AMSA #MaritimeHistory #Queensland
