AFMA welcomes the announcement by the Government in today’s MYEFO of its intention to confirm the debt treatment of bail-in bonds issued by foreign banks through their Australian branches. The announcement remedies an unintended technical position which, if adopted, would have prevented foreign banks from accessing Australian financial markets to fund their local operations. AFMA thanks the Government, Treasury, the ATO and members for their collective efforts to help preserve efficient operation of the markets. We look forward to working with key stakeholders in the new year on a legislative framework that ensures that similar issues do not arise in future. #Treasury #bonds #tax
