Today's 2024 WA Gas Statement of Opportunities, released by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), highlight that industry efforts to boost gas supply have eased concerns around potential shortfalls for the state. However, fast-tracking new gas projects remains critical to ensure reliable energy for WA households and industry. We’ve signed a new long-term sale and purchase agreement with Alcoa of Australia for the supply of natural gas. Commencing 1 January 2028, we will supply Alcoa with a total of 130 petajoules of gas over a 10-year term from across our equity interests in the Chevron-operated Gorgon and Wheatstone facilities, and the North West Shelf Venture. As one of WA’s largest domestic gas producers, we’re proud to continue our relationship with Alcoa’s WA operations. In fact, our relationship goes back four decades. It started in 1984 when Chevron and the other North West Shelf Venture participants began supplying gas to Alcoa as a foundation customer. Since 2020, Chevron has been supplying Alcoa from our own portfolio. The long-term agreement also reinforces the crucial role gas plays in powering the development of WA’s resources industry. Today’s announcement by the Victorian Government continues its demonisation of gas and ignores the crucial role gas plays in backing up renewables to provide reliable, affordable electricity. The proposal to extend its gas ban to existing homes and new businesses will cost Victorians more and rob them of choice, while doing nothing to address the state’s looming gas shortages. “This is more policy on the run that will push more households and businesses on to an already strained coal-based electricity grid and drive away investment in new gas supply,” Australian Energy Producers Victoria Director Peter Kos said. “The Victorian Government should be focusing on providing Victorians with reliable, affordable energy. The WA Government today provided environmental approval for the North West Shelf Project Extension - a welcome step for a truly nation-building project. “The North West Shelf project is critical to providing energy security and emissions reductions to the state and region – through long-term gas supply to Western Australian households and businesses, and supporting WA’s key trading partners,” Australian Energy Producers WA Director Caroline Cherry said. For more than four decades, the project has been a major contributor to Australia, providing $40b+ in royalties and excise alongside significant employment and business opportunities in the region. “The approval recognises the increasingly urgent need for new gas supply in Western Australia to ensure households and businesses continue to have reliable and affordable energy," Ms Cherry said. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gv3q8cZ6

Recent warnings from Australia’s energy regulator have highlighted the fragility of eastern Australia’s electricity grid, and reinforced the critical role of natural gas as the reliable back-up to keep the lights on. As Australian Energy Producers Chief Executive Samantha McCulloch wrote in this opinion piece, with Eastern Australia facing structural gas shortfalls from 2027, urgent action is needed to remove barriers to developing new gas supply. Ultimately it is Australians that will pay the price if governments do not act to bring new gas supply into the system sooner – through higher energy bills, grocery bills, housing prices, and being told when they can turn on their appliances.

The Victorian Government’s promise to fast-track regulatory approvals for new gas supply is welcome and long overdue. Victorian households and manufacturers are facing gas shortfalls after decades of government moratoriums, policy inaction and anti-gas policies that have driven away investment and delayed new gas supply projects. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan’s Economic Growth Statement promises to fast-track new gas extraction, storage and transmission projects alongside renewable projects, to “ensure reliable access to gas for Victorian businesses”.
