We agree, Madeleine King. Natural gas has a critical role to play in ensuring energy security, supporting the accelerated development of renewables and powering essential Australian industries. The Federal Government’s Future Gas Strategy is clear that Australia needs gas for decades to come. The ACCC and Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) have sounded the alarm on the risk of gas shortfalls. So as a nation, we need to get on with unlocking domestic gas.
The global shift to clean energy is Australia’s biggest opportunity for growth and prosperity in a generation. While we work to capture the immense economic opportunity that net zero presents, we also at the same time need to decarbonise our own economy by moving to renewable energy, firmed by reliable gas. The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has released a draft decision not to convert Basslink into a regulated Transmission Network Service Provider. The AER’s decision follows APA Group’s application in September 2023 to convert Basslink from a contracted Market Network Service Provider (MNSP) into a regulated asset. APA made a commitment during the 2022 acquisition process to seek to convert Basslink to a regulated asset under an agreed consultation process with the Tasmanian Government. The consumer benefits modelling undertaken by ACIL Allen on behalf of the AER as part of the regulatory conversion process found, in 10 of the 12 scenarios considered, that regulation of Basslink provided an average economic benefit to consumers of $1.6 billion for the period 2025 to 2050, compared to the counterfactual scenario of trading electricity as a non-contracted MNSP. If the draft decision is confirmed, APA will proceed with plans to trade Basslink as a non-contracted MNSP once the current Hydro Tasmania contract ends on 30 June 2025. APA Group announced the execution of a Development Agreement, long-term Gas Transportation Agreement and Connection Agreement with Tamboran Resources Corporation and Daly Waters Energy, LP for the Sturt Plateau Pipeline (SPP) connection in the Northern Territory. APA Group CEO and Managing Director, Adam Watson, said the project highlights both ongoing growth opportunities across APA’s gas transmission network and its critical role supporting energy security and transition. “The development of the Beetaloo Basin is in the national interest. We know there are significant risks of domestic gas shortfalls in the years ahead and that new sources of supply will be required from 2028 to meet supply gaps. This new infrastructure is critical to ensuring gas from the Beetaloo will be available to power the Northern Territory as existing gas supply sources deplete.” The development is subject to certain milestones being met, including obtaining third-party approvals such as a pipeline licence. APA Group welcomes the Australian Energy Regulator’s final decision to maintain light regulation for the South West Queensland Pipeline. The decision builds confidence to continue making the necessary investment in our East Coast Gas Grid to help meet gas demand on the east coast and support energy security for our customers and energy consumers. APA Group CEO and Managing Director Adam Watson noted, “We are committed to working with customers to get more, much needed, domestic gas to market along the east coast. We will confirm our expansion plans for the East Coast Gas Grid in the coming months.” Full ASX Release → https://lnkd.in/gMjEcZBA
