ANSTO extends a special thanks to the NSW Rural Fire Service Illawarra Sutherland Team for the recent successful hazard reduction burn last weekend at our Lucas Heights campus. Over 200 RFS volunteers and ANSTO staff took to the grounds to carry out the two-day burn across more than 50 hectares of thick bushland, with the aid of 15 fire trucks and one helicopter. The significant reduction in the fuel load on the ground – built up over several decades - will help to safeguard ANSTO’s campus and the local community against the threat of bushfires. The careful planning of this planned burn was years in the making and ensuring the protection of our native wildlife neighbours was at the forefront of this. ANSTO Emergency Operations Manager Bruno Monteleone said the difficult terrain of valleys, thick scrub, and steep clifftops made the job no easy feat for the RFS. “The planned burn was crucial to avoid any potential catastrophic impacts caused by a bushfire. Not just for the safety and protection of our campus, but for the fauna and wildlife, including the endangered koala habitats. “It was an outstanding effort from the RFS and ANSTO teams working long days and late into the nights to manage this planned burn.” Bruno MONTELEONE #BushfirePrevention #EnvironmentalSafety #CommunityResilience #EmergencyManagement #WildlifeProtection

Vietnam Scientific Visit to ATTAR Melbourne We were thrilled to welcome a delegation from Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) to our ATTAR Melbourne facility last week! ATTAR and subject matter expert Mr Paul Grosser @paulgrosser were selected by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to provide a specialised training program focused on the requirements ISO 17024 and ISO 9712, with the goal being the development of an ISO 9712 Certifying Body in Vietnam. This visit included a comprehensive agenda filled with training sessions, field trips, and hands-on practical sessions. This program offered a fantastic opportunity for knowledge sharing and professional development, strengthening both knowledge and international partnerships. We look forward to supporting our Vietnamese colleagues in their journey to develop a certifying body in their industry. ANSTO scientists have contributed to an important study published in The Cryosphere, shedding light on how cosmogenic radiocarbon (14C) is produced, retained, and lost within the compacting snow and shallow ice at a Greenland field site. The research offers crucial insights for interpreting 14C measurements in ice sheets, impacting our understanding of the carbon cycle and atmospheric changes over time. This work, led by University of Rochester & supported by Dr Andrew Smith, could enhance climate models and support future projects, including ambitious ice core drilling in Antarctica.
