As the healthcare industry embraces technology across every corner, it's critical to remember that technology should enhance, not replace the human connections that lie at the heart of patient care. ❤️ At a recent workshop in Dublin co-hosted by EY Ireland and the Trinity College Dublin School of Medicine, experts discussed the future of medical training, recognising the need for digital tools to support rather than replace authentic human interactions. This is particularly important as AI and machine learning become integral to healthcare. While these technologies hold great potential for improving decision-making and efficiency, they cannot replicate the empathy, compassion and deep connections that define excellent care. Key reflections: 🧠 The process of coming together, sharing experiences and collaboratively discussing the future of healthcare was as valuable as the outcomes themselves. 🦸 Healthcare leaders must nurture skills to lead in the digital era, ensuring that transformation fosters human connection. 🦋 The emotional impact of new technology should not be overlooked. Clinicians require support to successfully adapt to digital change. ⤵️ It's important to consider potential downsides of increased technology use beyond the benefits to health and treatment, including administrative burden, cognitive strain and burnout. ⚖️ Digital tools must support clinicians in making meaningful connections with patients, not replace them. Technology cannot replicate the authentic human empathy and compassion at the core of the doctor-patient relationship. As we look to the future, it's clear that successful digital transformation in healthcare is about balancing technological innovation with the enduring values of care, empathy and compassion to build a healthcare system that not only cures, but cares. Healthcare is undergoing a digital transformation – and medication management is no exception. Electronic Medication Management (EMM) systems are revolutionising how medications are prescribed, dispensed and administered by enhancing patient safety, streamlining workflows and empowering nurses and midwives to deliver better care. As the Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH) highlights, collaboration with frontline healthcare workers is essential to building safer, more efficient and impactful medication management systems. However, challenges such as resistance to adoption, particularly in sectors like aged care where hybrid systems still prevail. Nurses and midwives also face barriers including insufficient training, integration issues and reluctance to embrace new technology. How can we tap into the remarkable potential of digital health in medication management? 🧠 Utilise AI integration to enhance decision-making, automate documentation and improve patient-centred care. 🤝 Involve nurses and midwives in EMM design to support system adoption and create more impactful, user-friendly solutions. 🔄 Collaboration between healthcare professionals and developers is key to advancing digital health and ensuring patient-centred care. Researchers at QUT (Queensland University of Technology)’s Cardiovascular Engineering Laboratory have developed a novel approach for diagnosing arterial blockages in individuals with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This groundbreaking project, Led by Professor Zhiyong Li and co-designed with clinicians, the community, and consumers, has been supported from its early stages by MTPConnect and is now on the path to translation and commercialisation. In 2021, the QUT research team secured a $745,623.12 award through the inaugural round of the Targeted Translation Research Accelerator (TTRA) program’s Research Projects opportunity, alongside invaluable support from TTRA Partner ANDHealth. The interdisciplinary team at QUT has integrated medical imaging technology with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to offer new insights into vascular disease. This innovative approach aims to significantly improve the understanding and management of vascular conditions in people living with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. As their TTRA project progressed, the QUT team recognised the importance of commercialisation and market readiness in translating research outcomes into real-world impact. Professor Li said, “Navigating the complexities of commercialisation, including intellectual property management, regulatory compliance, and market positioning, presented a steep learning curve for our team. “Throughout the duration of the TTRA Research Project, regular touchpoints with TTRA Partner ANDHealth provided valuable guidance and support to the research project. By sharing insights and best practices, ANDHealth helped navigate challenges encountered during the project implementation, offering practical solutions and strategic recommendations to overcome obstacles,” he said.
