Important AI safety and quality work ahead for the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, in collaboration with our partners, consumers, and clinical leaders. The Commission’s Digital Health team are keen to harness the collective wisdom of the digital health community, and the broader health system, to help us answer the question: what does digital health, and AI, look like in the third edition of the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards?

This morning at #AiCare24 Dr Robyn Whittaker and Dr Rosie Dobson shared valuable insights! Dr Whittaker emphasised the importance of a governance model that supports early adoption of AI in healthcare, while also identifying and managing risks effectively. This approach ensures that AI tools are implemented responsibly and can deliver their potential benefits without compromising safety or ethics. Dr Dobson's study highlighted that both patients and health professionals see the potential benefits of using personal health data for AI in healthcare and have aligned but differing views on the use of these tools in practice. They are generally supportive of its use, provided that the data is handled with good intentions and transparency. It's great to see such proactive steps being taken in New Zealand's public health system! At #AiCare Opening Plenary, Prof. Enrico Coiera speaks about the progress made by the AAAIH, Roadmap plan that was launched one year ago. Where are we now, what have we learned, is the rubber hitting the road? A lot of progress has been done! The sector is hot, technology is moving fast but we are moving slow. Making use of the data in electronic medical record systems could save up to a staggering $5.4 billion per year by reducing the length of time patients spend in hospitals and up to $355 million through fewer duplicate tests. In his closing statement Enrico highlighted that he is delighted to see what has been achieved in the last 12 months and called for the momentum to continue.
