Just how far am I willing to go? I have been asking myself this question a lot recently. Not just as a startup founder, but also as a trail runner, where the consequences of pushing hard are much easier to see. I’ve been kicking off this year’s running season with the K42 of the Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival last Saturday: 42.2 kilometers and roughly 2.200 meters of elevation gain in under 6 hours and 30 minutes. At this time of the year, parts of the trails are muddy and sometimes even partially covered in snow. It‘s a rough, steep and quite technical trail. The first 20 miles are primarily a game of discipline. Dialling in the pace, neither going too fast nor too slow, focusing on nutrition and hydration and staying laser focused on the trail. Or so I thought. Despite careful preparation and a lot of hard work, sometimes things don‘t go as planned. Battling a recent cold, my heart rate was a lot higher than usual and nausea set in early on. From then on, everything was about sheer willpower. Concentration starts to fade, exhaustion creeps in and the feet are beaten up because of the steep inclines. Forcing myself to get the calories into my body despite the nausea was rather brutal. And then, after a lot of discomfort, I somehow managed to cross the finish line a reasonable time. I genuinely find it very difficult to distinguish between a destructive craving for comfort from a legitimate warning of the body because it’s right on the edge of long-term harm. After my first ultra marathon last year, I couldn’t even walk for a month without being in pain. Was it worth it? I am convinced that it was. The ability to keep focused on a goal when things don‘t go as planned, when I am exhausted and just want to go home is an ability that I would always prefer over comfort. Of course, I am nowhere near a professionell runner, many people are a lot faster than me and 42 kilometers is definitely not an outrageously long distance in trail running. But I don’t really care about that. What I care about is that two years ago, running for a single mile was quite an achievement for me. Today, I barely consider a half-marathon to be a long run. Long distance running is one of the best ways to practice delayed self-gratifiction. It‘s about voluntarily enduring a lot of discomfort in hopes that maybe there will be a subtle change in character that will pay off later in life. So when I ask myself how far I'm willing to go, the answer becomes clear: as far as it takes. So lace up your shoes, tackle that next challenge head-on, and remember: the only way to find out how far you can go is to keep moving forward. #iatf2024 #trailrunning #endurance

Would you ever go from being a manager to an individual contributor again? I had an interesting conversation the other day in one of the many WhatsApp groups, started by this proposition: 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆, 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗖, 𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿. As a manager, you’ll mostly have indirect information and are not affected by the processes most people are. This will accelerate your career instead of setting it back. I’ve heard a few reasons people give up being a manager for, but this was a new one.  People (engineers, product folks) usually go back to an IC role when they realize being a manager is a completely different job, and it is not "being a better engineer”. They end up hating the work: the constant meetings, administrative stuff, managing people and not getting that dopamine hit from feeling like actually doing something and making a difference. To quote my favorite existential comic: “𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯” Then a few people chimed in, saying they moved from manager to IC (usually from a startup / growth company to big tech), and it worked out well for them. The thing I started thinking about is whether this would work in the Middle East? It surely depends on the company, but in general management works very differently here than in Europe or in the US (understatement of the week I think, and it’s only Monday) My theory is that this would work with only a tiny percentage of companies here. What do you think? A/B Testing in search is particularly complex, with no one-size-fits-all approach. AI tools are good enough now that they can radically change your org chart. For the first time ever, I was able to build and deploy an app last week - and I’m not technical at all. How many people are really needed for a task? This question is now constantly on my mind and on the minds of founders I talk to. Most companies have lots of Engineering, design, ops, support, and marketing headcount that are focused on repetitive implementation of tasks.   This feels unnecessary now. Going forward companies will want more owners, fewer support roles, and smaller teams in general. But they will want much bigger budgets per employee for AI tools. Here are some tools I’ve found delightful lately - Polymet (YC S24), Replit, Vercel

We’re excited to present to over 200 enterprises at Malt’s executive summit this and next week in Berlin and Munich (sign up link in comments). If you zoom in, the slide says “Now’s the time. Don’t get stuck with Anchovies”. What that means is that the war for talent is simple - if you don’t have a freelance strategy today, you’ll be locked out from the future workforce tomorrow. And unlike cloud computing, where being late meant cheap software, being late to the Human Cloud means an inability to access top talent, which means the inability to ship, grow, and innovate. And boy are there plenty of startups using freelance models to replace incumbents. 🤝 Having tightly coupled Marketing and Product functions yields huge benefits for the customers and the business. However, the inverse is often the reality. As a CEO, aligning these two growth-driving functions should be a priority.  Some benefits I’ve observed when these functions are tightly coupled include: -Increasing CONVERSION by using consistent brand and value propositions throughout the customer journey -Boosting RETENTION by using personalisation algorithms consistently across email and on-site -Lowering CAC through stronger SEO by collaborating on the technical and content signals -And as a bonus, happy and engaged teams. One idea to align them is to have Marketing and Product co-create a vision of the user journey, or collaborate on the brand identity. 👶 Company reveal 👶 ⬇ Keragon - here's how it all started (Spoiler: This is not your typical Silicon Valley story) I met my cofounders 18 years ago during our military service and then studied together at Imperial College London. After uni, we started a company in the mobile adtech space and 3.5years later it was acquired by Glispa and then Market Group. After the vesting period ended, my cofounders and I decided to take some time off to focus on things we haven't had the chance to do over the 7 year grind. Even though there was a big overlap with Covid and restricted traveling, we managed to reflect, heal (yep, post-exit trauma is real) and eventually regrouped after 12 months. For the first time in a while, we held long sessions again - this time about career and life goals, and whether even considering working together on another play. Surprise surprise - our masochist part prevailed and we decided to jump again into the battlefield. However, unlike our first company, we weren't driven by a specific problem nor were passionate about a unique insight. This time, we decided to explore, agreeing on 3 core principles for our new venture: 1. pick any industry, but adtech 2. pick a broken space we could build a sector-defining company 3. life's too short to work with a-holes Healthcare quickly became the winner - as newcomers we dedicated half a year to researching how our skillset could give the most value in this space. And that's how we found ourselves hustling again: we reached out to 100s of healthcare professionals over 6 months, out of which 338 agreed to jump on a call to help us map the problems of the industry through their eyes - most of you are now LinkedIn friends, thanks for being part of the journey 🙏 We compiled and ranked a long list of problems - even though infrastructure is never the most glamorous play, we ended up picking this critical problem that was coming again and again and was right in our wheelhouse - healthcare providers are struggling with manual, repetitive, processes, and spend their limited time saving files instead of saving lives. And that's how Keragon was born. Incredibly grateful for focal (Daniel Darling), who were the first to believe in Avocarrot back in 2014 and are now co-leading the round of Keragon along with the amazing people at Afore Capital (Gaurav Jain), and also very lucky to have the backing and deep healthcare expertise from 25m Health - Lifepoint Health® (Thank you Ryan Macy and Merrill Anovick).
