🗞️ We are excited to share a recently published study in The Bone & Joint Journal (Research): "Artificial intelligence in #traumatology: a comparative study between conventional and AI-aided diagnostic performance in distal radius fractures" In this study, 11 physicians (six surgeons in training and five hand surgeons) assessed 200 randomly selected #wrist #radiograph pairs (AP and lateral views) from a #dataset of 26,121 anonymized images, with and without AI assistance, to detect distal radius fractures (DRFs). The results are promising: ✔️ #Sensitivity (correct fracture detection) improved from 80% to 87% ✔️ #Specificity (correct fracture exclusion) increased from 91% to 95% ✔️ The overall #error #rate (false positives and false negatives combined) was reduced from 14% to 9% This prototype study also tested the generalization (accuracy and reliability) of our AI algorithms for other musculoskeletal (MSK) applications. 🆕 Lower limb malalignment leads to early onset as well as accelerated knee osteoarthritis (#OA). This can have a significant impact on selecting the right patients for clinical trials. ✔️ Setting a New Standard in #Radiological #Foot #Assessments During the development of IB Lab #FROG, we identified #high #variability in foot assessments as a significant challenge for clinical users. The measurements #orthopedists rely on often vary, adding complexity to clinical decision-making and underscoring the need for a standardized approach. 👉 Our goal? To create the most comprehensive product on the market, covering 17 measurements across 5 use cases to meet diverse clinical needs. To achieve this, we rigorously trained IB Lab FROG to deliver consistent, expert-level results. 🌏 With over 240 million individuals worldwide, #osteoarthritis is one of the most common reasons why older adults seek healthcare services. In addition to the personal physical stress of osteoarthritis, society bears a tremendous economic burden: total treatment costs in Europe approach #€817 #billion per year. There’s no sign of it slowing down – the burden of osteoarthritis in Europe and worldwide is expected to keep rising. Leg malalignment, such as #varus and #valgus alignment, can cause and accelerate its progression. A study by Universität für Weiterbildung Krems (Donau-Universität Krems) presented at #ECR 2024 & #OARSI 2024, evaluated a novel algorithm based on IB Lab #KOALA for predicting lower limb alignment from knee X-rays. This approach might divert patients with knee pain to an early diagnosis, even before structural arthritic changes in the knee occur. In addition, this tool is designed to further support #clinical and #pharmacological #studies, allowing fast and more effective analysis. Using nearly 9,000 images, this deep-learning model achieved AUC values between 0.83 and 0.98, accurately predicting whether the hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle exceeds critical thresholds (5° or 7.5°).
