Talento - web app to sell photos Being a beginner in software engineering is challenging. I'm speaking from experience, not as a senior but still on the junior track. When I started, it was tough choosing which path to take. I decided to learn more and become a full-stack developer with a specialty in backend. Currently, I'm in my ninth month in the ALX Software Engineering program In this article, I'll break down a project I recently worked on that solidified my decision to be a backend engineer and how amazing the journey has been so far. Talento: A Web Application for Selling Photos For my final month in the ALX Software Engineering program, I had to complete a portfolio project. I had the option to work in a group of three, but I chose the challenging route of building both the backend and frontend on my own. I created a web application called Talento, designed for photographers to display photos from events and allow attendees to purchase and receive their photos via WhatsApp automatically. You might wonder why build something like this when there's social media. As a photographer, I often face the problem of not being able to reach everyone at an event, like a music festival, which means I miss out on potential earnings. Talento aims to solve this problem by providing a platform where photographers can upload their photos and share a link to their profile or collection, allowing attendees to choose and purchase their photos. To complete the project in a record time of two weeks, I had to manage my time and plan effectively. I started with the frontend to determine which endpoints I needed in the backend system. In this article, I'll focus more on the backend development, which is the main goal. Backend Development Breakdown Database: I used MySQL for database management because it's easy to set up and works well with the SQLAlchemy object-relational mapper. Given that this was my first major project, I chose tools I was comfortable with to meet my tight deadline. Login System: After setting up the database, I worked on the login system using the Flask-Login module due to its simplicity. I created necessary routes, including login, logout, and register, to test routes requiring login access. Account Retrieval System: With the login system in place, I implemented an account retrieval system for password resets. I used Gmail's SMTP to send password reset links and generated tokens that expired in an hour for security. Functionality: Once the basics were set up, users could register, login, reset, and change passwords, and logout. I then worked on the app's core functionality: creating collections, adding photos, allowing visitors to select images, and adding them to a download cart for checkout. Creating Talento was a significant learning experience and reinforced my decision to specialize in backend development. It also showcased the importance of time management, planning, and choosing the right tools for the job.
